Center for the Commercialization Of Electric Technologies CCET Board Visits Wind Farm near Abilene

Who is CCET? University Researchers Electric Utilities & Competitive Retailers High-Tech Companies The Center for the Commercialization of Electric Technologies brings together electric utilities, university researchers and high- tech companies to find technology solutions to challenges facing the electric power industry Technology Solutions 2

CCET Members University Researchers High-Tech Companies 3 Electric Utilities & Competitive Retailers Electric Utilities Competitive Retailers

What Are We Doing to Promote Smart Grid? Projects for Smart Substations and Transmission Management Projects for Smart Distribution Projects that Integrate DG

Synchronized Sampling and Phasor Development Description Working with DoE, EPRI, and ERCOT the CCET companies and university researchers are demonstrating these technologies at substations and within the ERCOT system to allow better operator control, blackout prevention and service restoration, maintain reliability standards, and integrate wind energy. The technology provides much improved operator situational awareness over existing SCADA systems. CCET Participants 7 RTDMS Deployment and Phasor Roadmap Development

Demand Response Pilot Description CCET is leading a Demand Response program in Dallas and Houston during the summer and fall of The pilot takes advantage of early deployment of advanced metering/AMI systems in Houston & Dallas to test DR in restructured market and consumer acceptance of various control strategies (thermostats, water heaters and pool pumps) by Direct Energy, Reliant and TXU Energy. CCET Participants TDUs REPs Vendors In cooperation with: 6

DG Project Coming Soon Involves new planned solar community Potentially involves most of our members Stay tuned

What Are We Doing About Interoperability? Not nearly enough, but we’re working on it

CIM Standards Task Force Description I. Developed an online data base of IEC/UCA Standards references and a collection of CIM models 2. Evaluated a proposed approach to begin CIM-like standards development for the application layer interface with the HAN 3. Promoting CIM for Distribution that supports CIM for Transmission adopted by ERCOT 4. Task Force to Participate in New Project Design CCET Participants 7

PUCT Tackling the Problem of Interoperability at the Meter/HAN Interface Description Texas PUC is working the process of defining the capacities required for enabling DR by TDSPs and solving the problem of capacity to support DR and assignment of responsibility among market participants and stakeholders PROJECT NO RULEMAKING RELATED TO ADVANCED METERING Project 4. AMIT HAN Project: Task List of Use Cases A1 – Load Control Message A2 – Price Signal Message A3 – Numerical and Text Message A4 – Ping the AMS Meter A5 – HAN Device requests AMS Meter data A6 –Messages sent from HAN Device CCET Member Individual Participation at PUCT Workshop 7

What Are We Doing About Interoperability? We’re working on it because the policies of Advanced Meters/AMI and RPS requires a solution – The commitment to restructured market – Legislatively driven invitation to IOUs to invest in advanced meters and AMI – Legislatively driven RPS is focusing attention on wind integration – These large investments will drive attention to the interoperability challenge

THE END FOR NOW (new look coming soon)
