Planning and delivering a Specific Skills Course: Driving Consortium Day 2011 Susan Moyle, Dandenong AMES

Warmer: How well do you know the road rules? Drive iQ 3D practice learner test Drive iQ 3D practice learner test

Why a driving course? Our clients want to get a licence – classes are very popular, even though they are offered in the holiday breaks In Dandenong area – public transport is inadequate so driving is essential Clients’ countries of origin have different road rules and very different attitudes to following them Media attention after drink driving accident at Dandenong West PS – need to address the issue

Target Client Group Clients who self select because of their interest in gaining a Learner’s Permit or Driver’s Licence in Victoria have a minimum English level ISLPR Speaking 1 Listening 1 Reading 1 Writing – not a focus (CSWE II or III clients) have basic computer skills with mouse and ability to access the internet are AMEP eligible often students seeking a licence for the first time sometimes experienced drivers overseas with little or no experience in Australia

Delivery details Currently in Special Skills Weeks over the holiday breaks, but could be offered as a short course in term time Ideally 3 hours per day for 10 days/2 weeks, but easily extended to 40 hours Mostly face-to-face in classroom but access to individual computers in ILC or computer lab for at least one hour per session is essential Learners should be able to practice tests in pairs then individually from Session 3 onwards

Methodology Face-to-face in classroom using data show Whole group / small group / pairs /individual activities to assist with communication skills for employability Online practice as individuals Group discussions and problem solving activities to assist with building problem solving skills and oral communication skills for employability Plenty of encouragement and reinforcement to build confidence

Learning Outcomes Choose one or two from CSWE II –Module I Learning Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of a short written information text –Module F Learning Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of spoken instructions CSWE III –Module H Learning Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of a complex written information text –Module I Learning Outcome 2 Demonstrate understanding of a news article –Module I Learning Outcome 3 Interpret visual texts

Assessment Strategy Select language learning outcomes from the Certificate in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) which relate to –developing the English language skills and –knowledge of the Victorian Road Rules required for driving safely in Victoria and obtaining a car learner permit Select a language learning outcome from CSWE II and CSWE III to address different levels of language proficiency within the student group Refer to AMES Training and Assessment Strategies for Certificates II & III in Spoken and Written English (CSWE)

Outline of the Course Specific Skills course for CSWE 2 and 3 Extended from 20 hours in one week to 30 hours over 2 weeks due to consistent student feedback Focus on content more than language Aims to help students –understand and learn road rules –practise hazard perception on computer –buy and insure a car Staffing Teacher must have a thorough knowledge of current Victorian Road Rules as well as ESL qualifications
