Welcome to the P.6 Curriculum Meeting Monday 3 rd September 2013

HOUSEKEEPING Attendance/ punctuality: Children to be in school for 8.55am. Register will be taken at 9.00am. All children in after 9.00am will be marked as ‘L’ for late and after 9.05am, marked as ‘U’, late after register has closed. No child will receive full attendance with consistent ‘ L’ and ‘ U’ marks on the register.

HOUSEKEEPING CONT… All children are expected to complete full days in school until 3pm Please try as far as possible to keep appointments etc to after school hours P.E Days are T.B.C with Coach (Outdoor Kit) and Friday (Indoor kit or swimming kit)

HOMEWORK HOMEWORK FOLDERS Homework folders go out on a Monday and return the following Monday. All homework must be completed in full by the following week. Homework can be handed in any day from Tuesday to Friday before the Monday. Please ensure that it is put into the Marking Box and ticked off on the sheet.

Homework folders All folders will have: 2 Literacy worksheets. Work is to be completed on a file page in PEN with school presentation rules followed An Easy Read Booklet Child can choose any reading activity to complete and do it on the page, using a Bug Club reading book. Writing in PEN and any drawings in PENCIL and coloured in colouring pencils only. A Mental Maths Worksheet The entire page is to be completed unless the teacher has given an individual different instruction. All number work is to be completed in PENCIL ONLY.

Homework continued… 4 Numeracy worksheets. 3 sheets will be number based and the 4 th one will link to the weekly Maths topic. All work to be done in PENCIL ONLY. A poly pocket containing Thinking Skills sheets Children are allowed to choose the activity they want to complete week to week. All Written work to be in PEN ONLY, drawings in PENCIL and coloured with markers or colouring pencils. A learning Log Homework e.g. Times Tables revision This makes up part of the Friday Test and must be built into homework time. Some weeks there may be a puzzle or an extra activity. Please always use the homework diary as a guide as to what needs done for the week.

Spellings SPELLINGS: Spellings are to be completed on a MON, TUES, WED and THUR night. All of the spellings are to be written out once nightly using the LOOK, COVER, WRITE and CHECK method and edited if necessary. Please ensure pages are ruled and school layout is followed.

Homework continued… All homework is to be completed to the highest standard or a child will be asked to repeat it either during school time or at night. PLEASE NOTE: All written work is to be completed in pen using the Oakwood model of joined writing. Please ensure work is dated, pages are ruled and the title is on the work. Full date, e.g. Thursday 6th September 2013 is on Literacy pieces, whilst the short date, e.g. 06/09/13 is on all other worksheets. Please ensure children write their names on all pages to be handed up.

Literacy continued… When reading to: Read a range of texts independently and talk about interests and preferences. Understand main ideas, themes, events and characters. Use appropriate vocabulary when referring to texts. Recount narrative and reconstruct texts. Recognise explicit meaning and show awareness of implicit meaning and attitudes. Locate and use ideas and information.

Literacy continued… When writing to: Compose independently. Sustain and develop ideas, using appropriate detail and vocabulary to make meaning clear. Use form and style appropriate to audience. Use correct sentence punctuation and structure. Correctly spell most regularly used words. Plan for revision and redrafting of writing with some independence Ensure handwriting is swift and legible.

Mathematics and Numeracy Including Processed in Mathematics, Number, Measures, Shape and Space and Handling Data. Number: Place value Multiplication and division Fractions Addition/ subtraction Percentage Decimals Square numbers Factors Multiples Rounding numbers Negative numbers

The Arts: Including Art and Design, Music and Drama A variety of arts to support learning in other curriculum areas including drama and visual arts. Studying the work of some great artists including Klimt, Picasso and Kandinsky. Composing, performing, listening and responding to music

The World Around Us Including Interdependence, Place, Movement &Energy and Change Over Time Giants Life during the Viking period Fair Trade Vikings Native America

Personal Development & Mutual Understanding Issues of personal, social and health education through circle time and class council. Issues about the environment and commerce through Eco Committee. Mutual understanding through the Revised Curriculum programme.

Physical Development & Movement: Develop skills in a variety of team games, gymnastics, dance and athletics following the Fundamentals Movement Scheme. General fitness and self-awareness. Swimming lessons for at Lisburn Leisureplex. RE Explore the Christian & moral significance of a variety of Bible stories including Creation, Parables of Jesus and the Easter and Christmas A world faith/ culture The belief of self and others.

ICT to; Be introduced to the safe use of the internet. Use CD-ROMs and specified websites to find out information for class themes : Giants, The Vikings etc Develop skills of communication; information handling & modelling through a variety of ICR based activities. Undertake IT based assessments using Abacus, ALTA and INCAS

How can you help your child? Encourage independent research for class topics using the internet (under supervision) & visiting the library. Discussing work being completed in school and at home. Ensuring that your child has all the necessary equipment for school. Encouragement with homework. Children should work independently on homework tasks. Keeping school informed of anything which may affect your child’s performance in school. Encouraging your child to use teacher’s guidelines for Literacy and maths homework. Encouraging your child to inform you of specific individual targets.

Other info etc…. Residential costs will be confirmed shortly. Date: Tuesday 8 th, Wednesday 9 th and Thursday 10 th April RSE Programme will be delivered in P.6 (Programme sheets will go out prior to starting) NFER/ Spelling and Mental Maths tests will take place at the end of Sept Testing will take place 3 rd /4th week of Sept/ Groupings will change as a result.
