e Awards / Recognitions received by faculty and students Nil List of eminent academicians and scientists / visitors to the department: i) Dr Bijan Bagchi, Dept. of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta.

Best Practices of the Department 1. Being students of basic science like Mathematics our students engaged in different cultural activities covering different types of songs, dance, recitation, extempore, comics etc. and performed time to time in the department. 2.We encourage our students to publish a wall magazine once in a year on different topics like Literature, science etc., as a result they write Articles, Essays Poems etc. and it is pasted on the wall magazine board of the department. 3.We also encourage our students to speak individually on different topics in mathematics and we the teachers organize seminars on Mathematics and its Applications in the department. 4.Our Students are very much interested in Academic tour/Excursion and they attend the tour each year. This year they visited Saha Institute of nuclear Physics and participated in Quiz and poster competitions held there on the occasion of International year of Chemistry The tour was organized by the department of Chemistry. 5.Departmental Teachers are very much engaged in counselling at the time of Admission particularly regarding the subjects applied for with combinations of optional papers, options for higher studies, career opportunities etc. We also counsel our students at the middle of the session having poor performance in the class. After the publication of midterm Examination results we discuss with them regarding enhancement of their performance. 6.We regularly teach Business Mathematics and Statistics to the students of the department of Commerce of our college.

Reasons for dropout: The socioeconomic conditions of the students are very poor, they come from rural places with economically weak backgrounds and are ordinary in merit. Circumstances of their family compelled to join them in any work discontinuing the course during the mid session. Scoring bad rank in JEE, some students admitted to mathematics Hons. just to take preparation for the next year JEE and leave college to pursue the Engineering courses for better career. In this region, some students get admitted in our department with average marks (due to pressure of surroundings), not all of them are fit for the course and after few days they step in behind. In most cases, students are first generation who are studying graduation course.

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES Students of our department are engaged in different co-curricular and extra curricular activities, viz. they prepare wall magazine, they are involved in cultural programme in collaboration with other department they prepare a stall to exhibit prime numbers and some relevant of the prime numbers. Few photo are given below.

Strength: Good co-ordination and co-operation among the departmental teachers. We also have good relation with our present and Ex-students. We have a departmental library. A good nos. of books in our library. Students are obedient and very keen to learn. We have internet facilities and self computer lab. An experienced teacher of 33years experience are still involved in our teaching and learning curriculum.

Weakness We are not getting a teaching post which is reserved for SC and lying vacant for many years. Only one full time teacher. Majority of our students come from neighboring rural places with economically weak background. Our students are ordinary in merit and admitted to this course with an average marks. Some students having good results in HS leave college to pursue Engineering courses for better career.

Future plan: We have a plan to make a separate Numerical laboratory with few more computers so that our students can get facilities of using computer lab in our own department. We have also plan to develop our departmental library to ensure that each students can issue at least two books. We are also interested to introduce internet to provide information and communication Technologies in the department to give our students the facility of access to the internet and so as to build the capacity of both students and teachers. In the time of teaching we observed that some students comes in our department by skipping some topics in their previous course and faced a lot of problems as they could not follow class properly. To overcome such type of problem we have a plan to introduce a Bridge course to teach these skipped topics in a suitable time like summer, winter recess and also in puja vacation. We have also planed to make few groups among the students and one teacher will be associated each group so that the teacher will look over the failure and success of the students in their academic affairs. We also intend to organise the internal seminar at least one in a month on different current topic and also to invite some subject expert to deliver some interesting and useful lecture on different aspect of our co curriculum. We want to arrange workshop on newly introduced topics in our syllabus by some renowned teacher. In future, if possible in the sense that if department gets all the sanctioned post of teachers what we had earlier years, we planned to introduce the P.G. Courses in Mathematics.
