Short History Haiti is a country on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. Hispaniola has two countries. Haiti makes up roughly the western 1/3 of the island. The Dominican Republic makes up the eastern 2/3 of the island. Christopher Columbus arrived in what is now Haiti in In 1697, the French took control. They brought African slaves to work on their large farms. In the late 1700's, the slaves rebelled. They fought for and won independence for Haiti in 1804.

Continue… After a period with many revolutions and counter- revolutions, US President Woodrow Wilson ordered his Marines to restore order in Haiti in The United States supervised presidential elections and in effect took control of the country. It was only until 1934 that US Marines left Haiti, but the country's finances would remain under American control until 1947.

Famous Places Port-au-Prince The capital is the center for tourist visits, where explorations of the cultural sights unfold, including sightseeing the infamous "gingerbread-style" homes decorating the region. The National Archives and the National Library are also popular places to check out in the capital.
