Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop Objectives n To present the status of the Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting Component of the GMES Marine Service about five years after its preliminary definition n To collect user feedbacks about the MyOcean service currently available in order to guide its possible improvement n To discuss the possible actions to improve the user uptake and to foster the development of value-added information and services based on MyOcean n To deliver input to the GMES User Forum in May 2011

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop Programme n Plenary session –To present the status of the Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting Component of the GMES Marine Service about five years after its preliminary definition n Four Splinter sessions –To collect user feedbacks about the MyOcean products and services –To get testimonies from users experience with MyOcean products and services n Plenary Panel discussion –What are the interest and benefits linked to a single GMES Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting service? –What are your suggestions for a better uptake of the European service by the user communities? –What are according to you the main issues to be addressed for an optimal evolution and sustainability of the service?

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop EEA Testimony case Produced by MyOcean in situ TAC but not yet used by EEA Role of GMES: Need to better understand the main drivers of climate change impacts in regional seas MyOcean can clearly contribute, but needs to enter into the right fora e.g. In context of regional sea conventions to achieve a more wide spread community acceptance

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Some basic user feedbacks Access to products n Registration is complicated and takes time, allow test without pwd n Web Portal not suitable for intermediate users –Allow for traditional methods i.e. ftp and opendap –Difficult to find products –Allow for compressed files n Watch up for connection capacity –Climate products are generally huge –File size is limited….

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Some basic user feedbacks MyOcean products n Performance and quality product indicators (bias, errors, etc) are needed n Higher resolution both in time and in space for both global and regional model modes n More parameters i.e. wind, waves and biogeochemistry n Access to runoff forecasts n Longer time scales (re-analysis products)

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Some basic user feedbacks Information on products and service n Information on Quality in general but also linked to the Catalogue n Quick-look on products n Changes in catalogue and products has to be properly informed to users – otherwise risk to loose confidence n Products should be fined at first click on the Web Portal n Inform about software products n Show better similarities between products n Web Portal is good but difficult to navigate

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Some basic user feedbacks Best practices – user uptake n Build good use cases showing the added value for downstream application n Share best practises and fit for purposes of MyO products with the MFSD and Marine Conventions n Develop training activities (methodology + technical aspects) n WIKI page on the web for user interaction n Do not be afraid using twitter and facebook

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Some basic user feedbacks Evolution of the MyO service n Biogeochemical model improvement is a top priority n Focus on limited number of products n Increase the number of in situ observations n Organize the feedback from users n Visibility of strategy and future plans n Long term commitments n Stronger role of private sector n Increase the number of users in the loop

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Long-term user strategy – round table and discussions n Improve involvement of private sector n Do not forget the public sector n Organise feedback from users –learn from EMSA and EEA user forums –Include EuroGOOS in the process n Be proud of our Data Policy of free access without costs for any kind of user category n Key Words –Focus on Quality –Make the service Reliable –Work for long term Sustainability

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma Long-term user strategy – round table and discussions n Publish the user feedback action list on web portal and notify the actions done n Arrange user workshops more often n Regional Conventions should be approach through national delegates instead directly towards the secretariats

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop Communication n Summary report prepared for the GMES User Forum in May 2011 –Prepared by Alain and validated by UW Chairs and others n Promotional movie (2 min) n All presentations available on the MyO web portal n Final User Workshop Report from WP17 –Splinter feedbacks and testimonies –Results from Panel discussions –Results from the questionnaire from the UW –List of proposed and prioritised user requirements, done and planned actions as well as no-action decisions

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma MyOcean actions already decided based on the user feedbacks n Improve registration i.e. Service Level Agreement n Add information on product quality n Improve web navigation

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop Conclusions n The 1st MyOcean User Workshop enabled intense and fruitful discussion about the current status of the MyOcean products and service and its possible improvement and evolution. n The validity of the concept linked to a single Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting service was confirmed, with emphasis on the quality, reliability and long-term sustainability of the service. n The implementation of proposed improvements about the products, the information on and the access to the products and service will be analysed by MyOcean. n The user uptake should be improved, especially by fostering the links with national coordination level and the private sector. Specific tools should be implemented for this purpose. n The MyOcean users will be kept informed about the actions to be proposed, with a view to maintain a constant dialogue with the user community between user workshops.

Marine Core Service MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / April 2011 / Roma GMES MyOcean User Workshop Thanks n Once again – thanks to all of you who planned and organised the workshop and all of you who took part
