1 MATTHEW 16:27-28  “THE SON OF MAN WILL COME, IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, WITH HIS ANGELS, AND SHALL REWARD EACH MAN ACCORDING TO HIS WORKS AND VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, THERE ARE SOME STANDING HERE THAT SHALL NOT TASTE OF DEATH UNTIL THEY SEE THE SON OF MAN COMING IN HIS KINGDOM.”

2 IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER  R. T. FRANCE: “IN THE O.T. JUDGMENT IS GOD’S PREROGATIVE, AND THE WORDS ARE WORDS ABOUT GOD. THIS IS QUITE A REMARKABLE ASSUMPTION OF A DIVINE ROLE FOR JESUS IN HIS FUTURE GLORY. HIS COMING WILL BE IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, IN THE SENSE THAT HE SHARES THE GLORY AND AUTHORITY.”

4 THREE ISSUES  1.) WHAT THE FATHER HAD DONE, THE SON WOULD DO IN LIKE MANNER, I.E. IN REGARD TO JUDGMENT.  2.) THE FATHER WOULD NO LONGER JUDGE.  3.) THE REASON FOR CHRIST’S JUDGMENT: THAT MEN WOULD HONOR HIM AS THEY HONOR FATHER—TO REVEAL THEREFORE, WHO JESUS IS!

5 THE SON WILL DO LIKEWISE  IF JESUS WAS TO COME IN JUDGMENT AS THE FATHER HAD COME, FOR THE SAME REASON THE FATHER HAD COME, THAT MEN WOULD HONOR THE SON AS THEY HONOR THE FATHER, THE QUESTION IS:  HOW HAD THE FATHER COME?  THE FATHER HAD COME IN JUDGMENT MANY TIMES!

12 A THOUGHT TO CONSIDER  N.T. WRIGHT: “IT IS CRASS LITERALISM, IN VIEW OF THE MANY PROPHETIC PASSAGES IN WHICH THIS LANGUAGE DENOTES SOCIO- POLITICAL AND MILITARY CATASTROPHE, TO INSIST THAT THIS TIME (IN JESUS, DKP), THE WORDS MUST REFER TO THE PHYSICAL COLLAPSE OF THE SPACE-TIME WORLD.”

13 NT USE OF LANGUAGE  MINEAR: “AS ONE RECALLS OT PASSAGES LIKE THESE (DAY OF LORD, DKP), ONE IS FORCED TO CONCLUDE THAT EVERY ESSENTIAL FEATURE IN THE NT PROPHECIES WAS AN ECHO OF THESE. NO CHRISTIAN PROPHET TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF THESE REFERENCES TO SOLAR DISASTERS. A FACT THAT SUGGESTS THAT THE AUDIENCE WAS EXPECTED TO UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE. MODERN READERS MUST, THEREFORE, COMPARE THIS IDIOM NOT WITH MODERN VIEWS OF THE COSMOS, BUT WITH AN ANCIENT OUTLOOK WITHIN WHICH AN INTELLIGIBLE MESSAGE WAS CONVEYED WITHOUT UNDUE DIFFICULTY.”

16 WHAT PETER HAD SAID  SALVATION FORETOLD BY PROPHETS WAS NEAR (1:5-12) (HETOIMOS)  JESUS WAS READY (HETOIMOS) TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND DEAD (4:5)  THE END OF ALL THINGS HAD DRAWN NEAR (4:7)  THE APPOINTED TIME (HO KAIROS) FOR THE JUDGMENT (TO KRIMA) HAD ARRIVED (4:17).

19 ISAIAH AND THE NEW CREATION  ISRAEL WOULD FILL HER SIN (65:6-7)  JEHOVAH WOULD COME (65:6)  HE WOULD DESTROY ISRAEL (65:13)  HE WOULD DESTROY HEAVEN AND EARTH (V. 17F)  HE WOULD CREATE A NEW PEOPLE, NEW CREATION, NEW JERUSALEM!  THE NEW CREATION AT THE DESTRUCTION OF O.C. ISRAEL!

20 ISAIAH AND THE NEW CREATION  REMEMBER: ISRAEL WANTED JEHOVAH TO COME AS HE HAD COME IN PAST (64:1-3)  HE HAD COME BODILY, VISIBLY  HE HAD NEVER COME BODILY, VISIBLY  ISAIAH IS THE SOURCE OF PETER’S PREDICTION OF THE DAY OF THE LORD  ISAIAH IS THE SOURCE OF PETER’S PREDICTION OF THE DAY OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!  WAS TO COME AS JEHOVAH HAD COME- BUT THAT WAS NOT BODILY, VISIBLY (IS. 64:2-3)!!  JESUS WAS TO COME AS JEHOVAH HAD COME- BUT THAT WAS NOT BODILY, VISIBLY (IS. 64:2-3)!!

21 SUMMARY  WE HAVE SEEN THE FACT THAT JEHOVAH CAME IN THE O.T.  THE TIME STATEMENTS WERE LITERAL—  THE LANGUAGE WAS METAPHORIC  THE PURPOSE WAS TO MANIFEST GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY  WAS TO COME “IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER”  JESUS WAS TO COME “IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER” AS THE FATHER HAD COME– AND THIS MEANS IT WOULD NOT BE BODILY OR VISIBLE. AS THE FATHER HAD COME– AND THIS MEANS IT WOULD NOT BE BODILY OR VISIBLE.  IT WOULD PROVE HIM TO BE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS!!

22CONCLUSION  THE COMING OF CHRIST IN 2 PETER 3 WAS TO BE THE COMING FORETOLD IN ISAIAH  BUT, THE COMING OF CHRIST FORETOLD IN ISAIAH WAS TO BE OF THE SAME NATURE AS JEHOVAH HAD COME BEFORE.  JEHOVAH HAD NEVER COME VISIBLY, BODILY, (LITERALLY) BEFORE.  THEREFORE, THE COMING OF CHRIST IN 2 PETER 3 WAS NOT TO BE VISIBLE, BODILY, (LITERAL).  IT WAS TO BE “IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER.”
