K’naan Warsame (“Traveler” in Somali) Is a Somali- Canadian rapper. He was born and grew up in Mogadishu, Somalia, just when the civil war in the country was beginning. He spent his childhood running away from death, and listening to hip-hop music that his father from America was sending him.

When he was 13, he and the rest of his family left Somalia, and stayed briefly with their relatives in Harlem before they move to Rexdale, Ontario, where there was a large Somali Community.

Waving Flag was an original song from K`naan`s 2 nd album, ``Troubadour``. It was a song written by K`naan from his own experiences of poverty, racism, as well as from his childhood experience during the civil war in Mogadishu, where in he and some of his childhood friends were attacked and fired by gunmen while playing.

LYRICSMEANING Born to a throne, stronger than Rome But Violent prone, poor people zone But its my home, all I have known, Where I got grown, streets we would roam. Pertaining to Mogadishu, Somalia, which was considered as one of the world’s poorest country. It became a place of violence too since the start of the civil war, where people were running away for their lives.

LYRICSMEANING So we struggling, fighting to eat and We wondering when we’ll be free, So we patiently wait, for that fateful day, It’s not far away, so for now we say Famine Patiently hoping and waiting for the day that Somali will be free

LYRICSMEANING Chorus: When I get older, I will be stronger, They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag, And then it goes back, and then it goes back, and then it goes back Symbol of freedom

LYRICSMEANING So many wars, settling scores, Bringing us promises, leaving us poor, I heard them say, love is the way, Love is the answer, that’s what they say The Somali Government made false promises to the people in exchange of their cooperation to join the military army.

LYRICSMEANING But look how they treat us, Make us believers, We fight their battles, then they deceive us, Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us, Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers Somali Government Buffalo soldiers members of the U.S. 10 th Calvary Regiment of the United States Army (wikipedia.org)

Buffalo soldiers Black soldiers who fight their battles with courage, honour, determination, and distinction in a field that was dominated by white without loosing their humanity
