Plants Introduction A plant has many different parts. Each part has a different purpose and each part helps the plant survive. Click on the flower below to read about each plant part. Record facts about each plant part in your Science Log. Then, use the information to answer The BIG Question ! in your Science Log.

Parts of a Plant Roots Stem Leaves Flower Seeds Fruit After you record facts about each plant part, go on to The BIG Question

Roots The roots help support the plant by keeping it attached to the ground. The roots also drink in and carry the water and nutrients needed for plants to grow. Click to return to Parts of a Plant

Stem The stem carries water and nutrients taken up by the roots to the leaves. Stems also provide support for the plant allowing the leaves to reach the sunlight that they need to produce food. Click to return to Parts of a Plant

Leaves Leaves are the food making factories of green plants. Leaves are made to catch light and have openings to allow water and air to come and go. Veins carry water and nutrients within the leaf. Leaves are the site of the food making process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis supplies food for the plant and oxygen for other forms of life. Photosynthesis only happens in green plants! Click to return to Parts of a Plant

Flower Flowers not only look pretty but, in fact, are important in making seeds. Flowers have many different parts that help make seeds so the plant can reproduce. Not every plant has flowers. Click to return to Parts of a Plant

Seeds Seeds are the part of the plant that help it reproduce. Every seed is a tiny plant with leaves, stems, and root parts waiting for the right things to happen to make it germinate and grow. Seeds are a plant's way of getting from one area to another by either wind, water or animals. Seeds are protected by a coat. This coat can be thin or thick and hard. Click to return to Parts of a Plant

Fruit The fruit is the part of a plant that holds the seeds. Not all plants produce fruit. Many fruits help seeds spread. Many things we call vegetables are really fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans. Click to return to Parts of a Plant

The BIG Question! What is one thing that could cause a Use what you have learned about the different parts of a plant to answer the following question in your Science Log! What is one thing that could cause a plant to die? Use information about plant parts to support your response. Click on the flower to return to home!
