Welcome to 1st Grade 2015-2016

Volunteers Anyone that would like to volunteer-for anything-I need you! 2 volunteers on Mondays-Baggy Books (30 minutes) (10:50- 11:25) 2 volunteers on Fridays-Centers (1 ½ hours) (9-10:30) 2 volunteers on Tuesdays-Light Steps/Data collecting (10:50- 11:25) My volunteer rep will call you with more details

Light Steps to Reading Self-Paced Phonics Program Follow the schedule to be done by the end of the year. Your child reads the packet-gets it checked off by an adult, then gets the next packet. There are 11 Packets. Big Tip…Be Consistent You’ll have an amazing Reader when they are finished!!

Baggy Books (Starts 8/31) Children still need real books to foster the love of reading. So… 5-8 books will come home on Mondays They will be exchanged each Monday

Raz-Kids Computer, Self Paced/At Home Reading Program Students can choose to listen, read or record books on their reading level. They retell the story in their own words They take a test on the story they read They earn stars to buy items for their rocket Raz-Kids, Light Steps, Baggy Books (20 minutes total each night)

Show and Teach Instead of Show and Tell Each student will be given 2 dates to present They will teach the class how to do something Up to 10 minutes We will start on September 21st We’ll do it again in January Don’t make it harder than it is

Monthly Newsletter and Webpage Each month I will email a monthly newsletter. The newsletter will also be posted on my webpage. If you don’t have email or would like a paper copy, let me know and I will send one home with your child. I have a Webpage. From the South Weber home page, find me under the faculty. Links for bookorders, lunch payments, class information can be found there.

Supplies Backpack Large Oatmeal container (needed by May) 12 pack of colored pencils (Crayola is my favorite) Glue sticks

Book Orders I will send home one per month Due on the 10th unless I let you know of a date change Order online-earn a free book for our class Activation Code GPHHB Scholastic.com

Misc… Lunch Money (pay online or send money in an envelope with name) Homework (comes home on Monday, due on Friday) Grades (1-2-3 scale) Task Wall Birthdays Finishing work Giving Tree Lunch Money: Please put it in an envelope with your child’s name on it or you can pay online. Homework: Read at least 15 minutes each night (includes Raz Kids, Light Steps and Baggy Books). The 3rd week of school a homework packet will start coming home on Mondays. It’s due on Friday. Grades: Our grading system is based on a 1,2,3. 3=mastering the concept, 2=close but needs some work, 1=We’ve got a lot of work to do. Task Wall: When students finish their work they work tasks. Birthdays: If you would like to send a treat you may…with all the food allergies may want to consider pencils, erasers…If you want to bring a treat please send a wrapped treat that can go home with them in their backpack. We have 26 students. Giving Tree: If you would like to help out with school supplies, you may take an apple from the tree. You could donate $3 to help cover the cost of the 3 ring binder for the memory books.
