Goodbye Flash, Hello HTML5 Kee-young Moon And Peter Burslem Innovation in Libraries 2012 October 8, 2012 Columbus, OH

About UMUC and Library One of 11 institutions in the University System of Maryland Over 100 bachelors and masters degree programs and certificates fully online 90,000 worldwide students A mostly online virtual library focused on just- in-time resources, services, and instruction

Why We Chose Flash in 2006? Popular technology for developing educational games Reliable Operating system and browser independent

Flash-based library tutorials

What changed in 2011? UMUC stopped developing flash objects for classroom instruction Flash is incompatible with many mobile devices HTML5 is the current web standard

What We Needed Capability to reuse existing tutorials –swf to video converter –swf to HTML5 converter Join in the Universitys decision to stop using Flash Adapt to new technologies

Why We Chose HTML5? Open web standard Compatible with mobile devices Plugin-free Designed for the development of rich web applications Tags with interactive functionality Play controller.play() or pause controller.pause() with and elements

What We Chose To Do Continue to create Captivate 5.5 tutorials –Publish tutorials in video format Use Google Swiffy –Swiffy converts SWF files to HTML5 –Allows reuse of Flash content Develop programs using javascript

The Results Improvements Students can now view and play tutorials on their mobile devices Challenges HTML5 browser support Javascript does not work well with the Universitys content management system
