Norman Y. Mineta Research and Special Programs Improvement Act November 30, 2004 established: Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA)

PHMSA Oversees the safety of hazardous materials shipments, and The transport of our nations energy supply by pipelines.

RITA Mission Identify and facilitate solutions to the challenges and opportunities facing Americas transportation system.

RITA resources will be used to: Coordinate and advance research efforts within DOT; Support professionals in their research efforts through grants and consulting services as well as professional development through training centers; and

Resources, cont: Inform transportation decision-makers on intermodal and multimodal transportation topics through the release of statistics, research reports, and a variety of information products via the internet, publications, and in-person venues such as conferences.

RITA allows the DOT an opportunity for collaboration, information sharing, coordination, support, and advocacy for its widespread research efforts.
