Risk Management Youth education outside the classroom

Negotiation Task In groups : Each person take 4 post it notes and write on each what they consider to be the 4 most important elements to consider when planning an EOTC event. (1 element per post it) Draw up a target chart with Vital/ Very important / Important and place one post it in Vital, one in V. Important, and two in Important. ………..

Why use EOTC? Why do we need to take students outside the school environment? Education outside the classroom provides students with opportunities to identify hazards, manage risks, and to take positive action where necessary. In Road Safety Education, practical on road experience for students is essential to enable them to take what has been taught in the classroom and apply it in real life situations. The teaching of Road Safety without the practical on road element is of limited value.

Safety Action Plan In Groups: Decide on an EOTC activity that might be undertaken for School Road Safety Education Draw up a table with 4 columns. Head the first column “Possible losses/damage”, list these in column one. eg. Lost child. Column two should be headed “ What could cause this to happen?” Column three “What can we do to reduce the chance of this happening?” Column four “ What will we do if this happens?”

Previous policy Safety and EOTC: Good practice guide for NZ Schools Even when an outside provider is contracted by the school to provide services, the board of trustees is still responsible for student safety. So a teacher involved in the event should be delegated to carry out this responsibility.

Process Map The process map is a simple way for PEO’s to assess what steps they need to take in an EOTC activity. Written Safety Action Plans are not necessary for every activity.
