J. FRANTZESKAKIS: THE TRAFFIC STUDY OF THE HERSONISSOS MUNICIPALITY. RITMO, ERMOUPOLIS SEMINAR 6-7/9/ FIRST GENERAL FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS Severe Traffic/Environmental Problems during Tourist Period Main Causes: −Irregular Configuration and Insufficient Capacity of Main Street Network −Poorly Designed and Regulated Intersections −Lack of Traffic Management & Police Enforcement −Shortage of On- & Off-street Parking Supply −Absence of Controlled On-street Parking −Illegally Parked Vehicles at Critical Locations (Intersections, Narrow Streets, Sidewalks etc.) −Lack of Street Markings & Regulatory/Information Signs −Increased Number and Use of Passenger Cars & Motorcycles, mainly Rented −Lack of Inter-municipal Public Transport Short-term, Low-cost Improvements Can Easily be Implemented to Fully Exploit the Present Street Network More Drastic and Costly Mid- & Long-term Improvements are Necessary to Cope with the Expected Continuous Increase of Tourist Traffic
