To maintain consumer trust, Food Safety must be built into the Corporate culture Food industry has a strong commitment to food safety and makes a conscious effort through good practices to achieve it. Creating and sustaining a legacy of trust with consumers, customers, business partners and employees takes both action and attitude.

Rule 1: Make Food that is Safe to Eat Make food that is safe to eat and inspiring confidence in the quality of product is paramount to our industry. When a problem does arise it’s important to respond quickly drawing on cross functional expertise to protect consumers. The risks of not doing that are too great for any business.

Integrated Food Safety enables successful Supply Chain Management Risk Categories Chemical Microbiological Physical Design Procure Convert* Distribute Trade Consumer Scope Risk Prevention Programs Design Safety Analysis Specifications HACCP Supplier QA Plant & Equipment Design/Capability Contracts Selection/ Approval Material Monitoring Continuous Improvement Specifications HACCP Supplier QA Traceability Sanitation & Pest Control Complaint Mgmt Process Capability & Control Traceability Warehouse Controls Complaints Warehouse Control Specification Labelling Consumer Response Process Capabilities We have an integrated approach to Food Safety across the supply chain It begins with the product concept and design and ends with consumer feedback. Starts with Design and grounded in sound Preventive Programs *Applies to internal & external plants

Optimal Design Minimizes Risk Emphasis on design and monitoring not auditing and finished product testing Robust product and package meeting consumer needs for foreseeable shelf life before and after opening Controllable processes that consistently eliminate hazards The right amount of people with the right skills who understand and care about Food Safety A production environment that prevents recontamination We believe that product design is the key to food safety.

Food Safety Experience Inspections – important as an opportunity to correct an undesirable condition, rather than as a “bad” result. Key is company response, investigation, and corrective actions. Product Testing- treat as a verification tool, not a preventive control. There is no “one size fits all” approach, should not mandate a minimum frequency or type of testing. Food Safety Plans are a web of information which should be reviewed during the inspection of the manufacturing environment, ensuring meaningful results. Our experience has provided valuable insight into the production and processing of food and the regulatory frameworks which foster food safety.

Food Safety Import Programs VQIP-Voluntary Qualified Importer FSVP-Foreign Supplier Verification Third Party Accredited Certification Relationship between programs administered by CBP C-TPAT and FDA FSMA Food Safety Modernization Act brings new requirements to import trade. Question of definition and interpretation. Ongoing work to distinguish between requirements and ovoid overlap. Coordination between border regulatory agencies FDA and CBP hold potential for streamlining entry process while ensuring quality and safety.

International Cooperation, Coherence and Convergence Industry Supports International Standard Setting-CODEX Trade Agreement Disciplines WTO SPS Agreement TPP seeking WTO Plus Capacity Building PTIN WTO recognizes three international standard setting bodies to protect animal, plant and human heath-- OIE, IPPC and CODEX fundamental basis of sound science. FTA’s defer or build on WTO and TPP is designed to go beyond WTO. Industry pushing for TPP to address: Transparency Provisions including notification, comment period, adjustment period, response requirement and electronic documentation Science and Risk Analysis including risk analysis principles such as “science based”, non-scientific objectives, and NTC’s. Systems Approach including lab testing, analytical methods, right to appeal and reference labs General Progress including new procedures and no dispute settlement. Capacity building, raising all boats and complements ongoing industry efforts.
