Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Hero Journey

Ordinary World The Ordinary World is his normal life when he goes to school everyday. This is the Hero’s homeland with friends and family.

Call To Adventure He sees that it is a wonderful day and that it should not be wasted by going to school. The action that causes the story to happen.

Refusal Of The Call There is no refusal by Ferris but Cameron doesn’t want to go because he might mess up the car. When hero feels he is to good to go on the adventure.

Supernatural Aid His Conscience helps him avoid Rooney and have the greatest day of his life. Provides hero something that will help him along in his adventure.

Crossing the Threshold When Ferris makes Cameron make a phony phone call to Rooney to get Sloan out of school. When the hero ventures into the world of unknown.

In the Belly of the Whale When he and Cameron go to school and pick up Sloan. Rooney is outside waiting with Sloan but doesn’t catch Ferris. Old world is destroyed, hero goes inward for rebirth.

Road of Trials When he goes to The Empire State Building, Wrigley Field, and the stock market. Tests that the hero faces in his journey.

Woman as the Temptress They see Ferris’ dad at the restaurant; Sloan and Cameron tell Ferris to give up and turn himself in. Hero is shown what perfection is really like.

Atonement With Father Realizes that he can avoid any one and is the master of ditching school. Hero overcomes his fear.

Apotheosis He ditches Sloan and Cameron. He then gets up on the float and sings in the parade. Hero becomes free from all fear.

The Ultimate Boon When Cameron finally tells Ferris that he has seen everything he could ever want to see in Chicago. Hero receives his prize.

Refusal Of Return There is no refusal by Ferris but there is a refusal by Cameron when he sees the mileage on the car. Hero wants to stay in isolation with boon.

Magic in Flight When Jeanie sees Ferris out in the street and races home to try and prove that he ditched school. Hero has reward and returns to safety.

Rescue From Without He is saved by Jeanie when Rooney is about to bust him in the backyard. World comes and saves the hero.

Crossing Return Threshold When Ferris has to race upstairs and make it look like he was home the entire day. Hero returns, world has now changed.

Master of Two Worlds He has now mastered the art of ditching school while not getting caught and being able to fake sick in front of his parents. Hero gains wisdom in spiritual and material world.

Freedom to Live He now has a better look on life and how things will shape up for him next year in college. Hero has learned to be.
