Introduction What is the role of a safety device in a vehicle? Vehicle safety features are distinguished by two categories; ‘Primary Safety’ and ‘Secondary Safety’. Primary safety features aim to prevent an accident taking place, e.g. good brakes, tyres. Secondary safety features aim to prevent/minimise injury to a vehicle occupant once the accident has occurred, e.g. side impact protection systems, airbags.

Benefit. The wearing of seat belts is preventing many of deaths and serious injuries taking place on road traffic accident. (Remember no spare parts for Human beings) However: Seat belts, of course, do not prevent an accident taking place. They do, play a crucial role in reducing the severity of injury to vehicle occupants involved in an accident.
