Benefits of the NGO Initiative n Important forum for the interests of developing & non-aligned nations. n The opportunity it presents to allow ISOC a practical way to explore a new framework of co-operation with international bodies. n Allow ISOC to advance objectives of a more progressive approach to Internet dev. in the societal arena in particular.

ISOC/NGO Activities to Date n Delivery of a discussion paper entitled: “ Global Trends that will impact universal access to information” for Unesco’s Info/Ethics Conference, Paris Nov n Moderating a session at the Unesco Conference on “The Global Public Arena, the Media & the Information Society” in Santiago de Compostella,Spain Nov16-18 n Moderating a panel on “Forum on the Future” for Unesco, Paris, Nov 7, n Excellent visibility for ISOC/ISTF - over 100 country members were represented.

Finding a Framework for Enlargement of ISOC’s International Role n Building credibility with Gvt. Policy makers & other NGOs from the developing regions, allows ISOC to play an important role in influencing international decision- making on Internet development. n Opportunity allows ISOC a practical way to explore a new framework of cooperation with international bodies that will allow us to advance our objectives in shaping discussion and policy on the future of the Internet.

Goals of CRI in Synch with ISOC NGO status n Proposed collaboration goals with Unesco are focussed on providing research reports, and recommendations for policy. n Proposed Mission of CRI & ISOC collaborations are completely in synch - with an emphasis on expert- researched and published deliverables.

Comparison of Proposed Goals: ISOC/UNESCO CRI Mission n Recommendations, Reports supported by research findings… n New thinking/innovative approaches...explore new Ed/social cyberspace apps n Propose innovative pilot projects n Proposals for concrete policy agendas n Advance the social / democratic development of Cyberspace. n Establishment of global initiative on public interest Policy for Cyberspace. n Prepare Recommendations. n Develop concrete props. n Provide research. & policy support; organize confs., educational initiatives...

Proposed Funding Sources: Mix of Private/Non-Profit n FOUNDATIONS u Rockefeller Foundation, MacArthur Foundation etc n PLATINUM MEMBERS u Members interested in supporting policy & educ. n AMERICAN UNIVERSITY u Funding ‘in-kind’ physical location,ongoing operations,overhead, site for conferences etc. u Access to student interns to assist for credit in CRI related academic fields. n Non profit contributions through ISOC

Timeframe for Activity n ISOC to draw up an MOU with American University n Immediate contacts with Foundations/ Prospective platinum members. n ISTF will use its funds to fund the development of a full detailed proposal to be written by Dr.Venturelli while on sabbatical leave n Final draft to be ready by Jan 2001 (Foundation - depending….

Timeframe for Activity Part 2 n Proposal to be submitted formally to Foundations for funding by end of Jan 2001 n First Quarter 2001, work on creating a network & database of experts; identifying initial research projects that can lead to early publication dates. n Identifying /moving forward with a Publisher for the Institute’s outcomes
