A Useful Study Technique Reading With A Purpose A Useful Study Technique

Does this ever happen to you? Fall asleep while reading? End up finding other things to do instead of your reading? Read the same page over and over again and have no idea what you just read?

How about this? Can’t understand your notes when studying for a test? Have to re-read everything from that unit to study for the test? Are you surprised by what information is actually on the test?

This could be why: Reading and note taking are effective forms of studying is vital for success Organized notes and engaged reading habits greatly increase your chance of good grades on exams

What are some good reading habits? Cognitively engage with the text Comprehend what the text is communicating Write down key terms/ definitions in a notebook Highlight important information

How do I develop good reading habits? It takes time and consistent effort Focus and concentrate specifically at the task at hand While reading, ask questions… Who/what are the main subjects? What is the goal or vocal point of the reading material? What important concepts should I be paying attention to? After every main section in the text book write a two to three sentence summary of that section in your notebook Manage your time wisely to avoid overloading yourself with information

Why would I want to do all that? Benefits of good reading habits Eases the pressure off of your memory Creates reference material for studying Actively engages the mind and organizes the thought process Allows comprehension of reading material

So, how is this going to help me study? Easy, just refer to your personal notes and any in-class notes that you may have Keeping your information organized makes it easy to streamline your reviewing process While reviewing your notes, feel free to implement personal study habits Repetition and constantly reviewing Re-writing notes Explaining facts to friends or family members

What are my personal study habits? Some people study best with no distractions such as phones, music, television or roommates that could hinder their concentration or focus An academic setting such as the Library maybe more beneficial instead of your room http://library.semo.edu/ Kent Library Some students enjoy having background noise while they study (listening to music or television) Additional study places: dorm room, lounges, cafeteria, computer labs, study halls, or even outside rest areas

The bottom line: Develop good reading and studying habits Find out what habits best fit you and are the most successful Be familiar with deadlines and test dates Start reviewing for exams at least one week in advance Avoid distractions that are hazardous to studying
