Systematic Approach Planning and Clarification Conceptual Design Embodiment Design Detail Design TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION

Product Planning What is the first step when given a design problem? Define the Problem, not the Solution! TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION

Define the Problem TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION PROBLEM STATEMENT What is the Essence of the Problem? What are the Objectives? What are the Essential Properties?

Clarify the Requirements TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION Requirements Demands Must Have! Wishes If Possible

Refining the Requirements TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION Quantify Anything involving numbers or magnitudes Eg. Max Weight, power output, volume flow rate, etc. Qualify Permissible variations or special requirements Eg. Waterproof, corrosionproof, shockproof, etc.

Create a Requirement List TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION Group Name:Requirement List for:Issue Date Problem Statement:System Diagram Demand or Wish?Requirements

Define every Requirement Possible TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION Geometry size, height, breadth, length, diameter, space requirement, number, arrangement, connection Kinematics type of motion, direction of motion, velocity, acceleration Forces direction and magnitude of force, frequency, weight, load, deformation, stiffness, elasticity, stability, resonance Energy output, efficiency, loss, friction, ventilation, state, pressure, temperature, heating, cooling, supply, storage, capacity, conversion Material physical and chemical properties of the initial and final product, auxiliary materials, prescribed materials (food regulations, etc.) Signal inputs and outputs, form, display, control equipment Safety direct safety principles, protective systems, operator and environmental safety Ergonomics man-machine relationship, type of operation, clearness of layout, lighting, aesthetics

Define every Requirement Possible TASK PRINCIPLE SOLUTION (CONCEPT) PRELIMINARY LAYOUT DEFINITIVE LAYOUT PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS LIST (DESIGN SPECIFICATION) SOLUTION Production factory limitations, maximum possible dimensions, preferred production methods, means of production, achievable quality and tolerances Quality Control possibilities of testing and measuring, application of special regulations and standards Assembly special regulations, installation, siting, foundations Transport lifting, clearance, transportation Operation quietness, wear, destination/environment, special uses, market Maintenance service, inspection, repair, painting, cleaning Recycling reuse, reprocessing, waste disposal, storage Costs maximum permissible manufacturing costs, investment, depreciation Schedules end date of development, project planning and control, delivery date

Component Highlight Auduino

Arduino Single-Board Microcontroller Open Source Hardware 8 bit processor running at 16Mhz Boards consist of several a USB port, power slot, and several pins There are both input and output pins ( 5 V limit) Output pins are either digital, or PWM pins (simulated analog) Input pins are either digital or analog Programs can be written in C/C++ or using the Arduino programming environment

Arduino Advantages: Inexpensive – Knockoff Arduino Uno boards cost ~ $8 Convenient form factor Large and robust community Many “Shields” that can add extra capabilities Disadvantages: Slow processor limits capabilities
