Montana Tribes and Reservations

Blackfeet Reservation  The Blackfeet is the only tribe that lives on this reservation  At one time it was the largest of any Montana reservation.  Due to the Dawes Act their land was greatly reduced and offered to incoming homesteaders  Today it contains 1 1/2 million acres

Flathead Reservation  Home to the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille tribes  Located between Missoula and Kalispell  Fertile valleys and tall mountains surround this reservation

Kootenai Their territory follows the Kootenay River on the western side of the Rocky Mountains. Salish and Pend d’Oreille The homeland of these two tribes extends all along western Montana and east of the Continental Divide

Rocky Boy Reservation  In 1917 the Rocky Boy reservation was created to provide lands for the Chippewa and Cree tribes  Rocky Boy was named after a Chippewa leader  It actually meant “Stone Child” but was translated incorrectly

Can anyone tell me the name of the Reservation closest to Missoula? Can anyone name one of the tribes located on this reservation?

The Chippewa and Cree tribes are closely related. For many years they lived together and often married each other

Fort Peck Reservation  Fort Peck Reservation is located in Northeastern Montana  Home to the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes  This reservation includes more than 2 million acres of land

Crow Reservation  The Crow tribe is the only tribe that lives within the territories of this reservation  It is located in Southcentral Montana  About 75% (10,000 ) of the Crow tribe lives on or near this reservation

Northern Cheyenne Reservation  Southeastern Montana is where this reservation is located  The country is rugged and the Crow’s are their neighbors to the left  This is home to the people of the Cheyenne tribe  A smaller reservation, it only has a half a million acres within its boundaries

Fort Belknap  Home to the Assiniboine and Gros Ventre  650,000 acres of plains and grasslands in Northcentral Montana  This reservation is the only one entirely Indian owned

Little Shell Reservation  This band of Chippewa tribe is located in Great Falls, Montana  This tribe does not have a designated reservation  The tribe is fighting for federal recognition in order to receive land for a reservation
