How Do Mountains Form? SPI’S Science 7.7.1, Reading 5.1.2, 5.1.7, , , , , ,

Main Idea You will name and describe the four types, or classes of mountains. See if you can figure out what type mountains the Smokies are!

 Dome mountains  Fault-block mountains  Fold mountains  Volcanic mountains Vocabulary

Let’s write our vocab. definitions in our Science Journals  Dome mountains– mountains that form when magma pushes up on Earth’s crust but does not break through.

Vocab. Cont…  Fault-block mountains- mountains that form along fault lines where blocks of rock fall, are thrust up, or slide. The Rocky Mountains are fault-block mountains, and they are located in the Southwestern region of our country. P. 229 of your text has a picture of a fault-block mountain.

Vocab. Cont…  Fold mountains- mountains that form where two plates collide and force layers of rock into folds. (On P. 228 of your text is a picture of the Andes Mountains which are Fold Mountains.)

Vocab. Cont…  Volcanic mountains- magma that rises up through the Earth’s crust, forming a mountain.

Read to find out… We’ll read PP 230 and 231 to find the following information:  Where does volcanic activity occur? o How do dome mountains form?  Which mountains have been shaped by erosion?  How do erosion mountains differ from all other types of mountains?
