(defective (adjective) means that the product had a problem when you bought it but you did not know about the problem at that time). A defect: this is the noun form of the word. How do you feel when you buy something that either does not work or breaks very soon after you buy it. Let’s try to tell our classmates what we do when we return something. Let’s also tell how we feel when we try to explain the problem to a customer service representative.

Has the rise of technology (computers, smart phones, the internet/websites etc.) had a mostly positive impact or mostly negative impact on …….. …..education?…..innovation? … quality of life? …..political expression…..productivity? …..privacy?.... Example: “I think new technology has had a mostly positive impact on our quality of life because we work more efficiently.”

The statistics above are based on a survey of 12,002 people in America. You can see that most of the Americans who were surveyed (72%) think that technology has had a mostly positive impact on innovation. How does technology and the internet help ….education? …personal freedom? Let’s each tell our classmates at least two (2) of our opinions about these different areas of life.

What is “opening weekend revenue”? That just means the total amount of money the movie made at movie theatres on the first weekend after release. This is a very important time for a movie and it is when it usually makes the most money. Let’s ask our partners: Have you seen any of these movies? Yes, I saw _________. I thought it was really good because __________________. It was about ____________. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

Do French people like Muslims? What about people in England (Great Britain)? How about people in Germany? What is your view of Muslims? Is it favorable or unfavorable? (favorable= it just means you like them or dislike them for some reason) Let’s try to guess about Europeans views of muslims…. Example: “I think French people have a more favorable view of Muslims than Italians.”

Why do Italians dislike Muslims more than Germans? Why do British people like Muslims more than other people in Europe? The data above seems to show that most Italians don’t like Muslims. Do you believe that conclusion? Do you believe these statistics? Now … let’s try to guess where most muslims in Europe live? Are most muslims in Italy? Are most of the muslims in Europe in England/Great Britain? Let’s each table try to guess …..

First, what is a “diaspora”? It just means a group of people who have moved away from their original homelands and now live in other countries. You could also just call them an “immigrant group” that’s all; it’s nothing special. So, the chart above shows both 1. the total number of muslims in each country, and 2. the percentage of the population in that country which are muslims. Does it surprise you that in the countries which most dislike muslims there are the least of them? That is, Italy has the fewest muslims but they have the worst view of them.

In China people use WeiXin ( 微信 ), but what do Americans and other people use? Well the answer is above. It’s an application called “WhatsApp”. It is just like WeiXin. Let’s try to guess where most WhatsApp users come from? Do they come from Brazil? Do they come from France? … We can see that there are about 700,000,000 users right now…but where do they come from? Example: “Where do you think most WhatsApp users come from? I think most/half/some come from ____________. …or …I have no idea!

Please note: these statistics are from January Most whatsapp users do NOT come from the United States. Should you start using it…..? Do you want to try it? Why yes? Why no? Could it help you meet future business partners in foreign countries?

What are the bright spots on the map? What do they stand for? What do they represent? Let’s try to guess…. We can say “Well… many are in the US and Europe and Japan and a country near Pakistan … what country is related to other countries in this way?

All of the bright white spots on the map are American military bases. Let’s ask our classmates: Why are there so many American military bases in Afghanistan? Why so many in Japan? Germany? England? Is this good for the world? What does it show? Can America really be the “world’s cop”? (The slang word “cop”=police) I think it’s bad because ___________. I think it’s good because ___________.
