Presentation Order What Is Google Sky? Who Uses It? How Does It Work? Why Use Google Sky? Not The First Time Competitors? Recap

What Is Google Sky? A sky tool in Google Earth for viewing stars and astronomical images Released August 27 th, 2007 Produced by Google through a partnership with the Space Telescope Science Institute An application for computer users to look at the universe with the click of a mouse YouTube Video On Google Sky

Who Uses It? Educational Personal Universities Government Teachers Students Children Parents Astronomy Enthusiasts

How Does It Work? Google Sky is made up of stitched photographs of the heavens pieced together to make one giant navigation able database of the universe. Basically, pictures are taken from a high-powered telescope and placed in a database which are then uploaded when using Google Earth in Sky mode

Why Use Google Sky? An awe-inspiring look of the universe One of the unique features of Google Sky is that you can plug in your address and the program shows you what the sky above your home looks like You can bookmark constellations, rotate the whole sky and zoom in to see details of black holes and stars

Not The First Time Google Sky isn’t the first time Google has ventured into space Google Mars – (March 06) Google Moon – (August 06) Both services use data from the US Space Agency NASA (signed agreement in December 06)

Competitors Stellarium Free open source tool that gives people a chance to access more than a million stars, in addition to planets and moons Created by Fabien Chereau Starry Night A widget for Apple Mac users that allows them to see the night sky from and location on Earth Created by Imaginova

Competitors – Part 2 The Sky (Software Bisque) Celestia (Open Source) Celestia SkyTools (SkyHound Software) VIRTUAL OBSERVATORY (The Deadly Microsoft) “Expected to be very similar to Google Sky”

Recap A sky tool in Google Earth for viewing stars and astronomical images Used by universities, government, children, parents Google Sky is made up of stitched photographs of the heavens pieced together to make one giant navigation able database of the universe.
