Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) By Phil St Jacques & Eric Mott

Creation of TVA -Established by Congress on May 18th, One of the largest public works programs -Roosevelt believed it was duty of gov. to supply electricity  Because private enterprises did not  This causes controversy

Creation of TVA (cont.) -Part of Roosevelt's New Deal -Aimed at ending the Depression -Roosevelt wanted to create: "A corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed the flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise."

Where is the Tennessee Valley? -Drainage basin of the Tennessee River -Includes: Tennessee SW Kentucky NW Georgia NE Mississippi Western Virginia North Carolina

Main Goals of the TVA Main Purposes: -Tackle economic issues o Through electricity, farming, construction, etc. -Conservation o Part of New Deal, One of Roosevelt's "C's" -Provide electricity o Only 10% of rural areas had electricity

What did they do? -Built dams Controlled floods, produced electricity, improved navigation on rivers -Worked with farmers to preserve environment Taught new farming technique, replanted forests, developed fertilizers -Provided low-cost electricity Dams produced hydroelectric low prices

Major Issues -People thought gov. shouldn't interfere with economy  Said it was step towards socialism -Utility companies also opposed  Said government was taking away business

Government & Involvement -Was declared constitutional -Many court cases against it  Concerned about gov's involvement -Government became involved in jobs & public works -Followed Roosevelt's idea of increased federal spending

Effects -Construction of Dams  Created 80,000 temporary jobs -New farming techniques  Brought region back to fertility -New power sources  Made farms more productive -Planted new forests  Conserved soil by reducing erosion

Effects (Cont.) -Modernized the Tennessee Valley area -Made life easier during tough times -Overall was very successful -Program is still active today
