Quiz Section 18.2: Stars and the Sun  You may use your book and your guided notes to complete the quiz.  May the force be with you!

KWL Graphic Organizer  Complete the “K” and “W” portions of the KWL chart before we begin this section.  These sections are: “What I KNOW” about our solar system “What I WANT to know” Each of these sections needs AT LEAST 5 items.

KWL Graphic Organizer  The next few classes, as we go through this section, complete the “L” section of the chart.  The “L” section is: What I Learned  This section needs AT LEAST 10 items.  This KWL chart WILL be collected and graded

Section 18.3 The Solar System  For centuries, people have known about 5 of the planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.  Why?  These planets can be seen from Earth with the unaided eye.

Section 18.3 The Solar System  In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus argued that all planets, including Earth, orbit the sun.  Shortly after that, astronomer Johannes Keppler showed that the orbits of the planets are ellipses, not perfect circles. Ellipse Circle

Nine Planets Orbit the Sun  After people started using telescopes to study the sky, 3 more planets were discovered: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.  Because Pluto is so small and far away, it wasn’t even discovered until  In 2006, Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet.

The Solar System  Solar System: the sun and all the objects that orbit around it.  These other objects include all meteors, comets, and asteroids.  The planets in our solar system are much smaller and nearer than stars.

Planets Reflect Light  Planets do not give off their own light.  They can be seen from Earth because the surfaces of the planets or clouds in their atmospheres reflect sunlight.  The brightest object in the sky, besides the sun and moon, is Venus.  Venus appears bright in the sky because it has a thick atmosphere that reflects sunlight very well.
