Introduction! Chris Kameen Sydney Sailing School The best place in the world to learn to sail! Accessible, fun, safe… You’ll never sail alone Focus of tonight: Who the market is Brief overview of the barriers to sailing What Sydney Sailing School is doing to address these How you can help What’s coming up and questions

Sydney Sailing School Reason for being in existence: Get more people sailing and on the water Who is the market? Existing sailors family and friends Ladies aged make the decisions for what the kids do! year old ex-sailors

Current Challenges facing sailing in Australia Ageing Demographic of current sailors Average age that someone starts sailing is 20 years old About 15% of current membership is less than 20yrs old Majority over 60 yrs old Perceived as “exclusive, for older people, international and dangerous” Sailing has high fixed costs not covered by council rates! (note only 7% of people that left the sport said cost was the main factor)

Motivations for new people getting into sailing 70% of people want to sail socially or for relaxation 15% want competition (compared with 34% of sailing members) All details have been taken from the Gemba report and the YA Annual report and give a snap shot. Available on the YA website.

Overview of a similar sport: Skiing Step 1: learn to ski Step 2: skiing becomes annual event Step 3: purchase some equipment Step 4: maybe join a club Step 5: Maybe start competing Why do we expect new sailors to go from in less than 6 months?

Sydney Sailing School focus: Address the needs of the market Sailing must be: Fun, social, low time commitment, inclusive, safe Convert sailing participation into club participation

We don’t want a bubble! We need an entry point for someone throughout the pathway Kids programs Adult programs - including universities Family programs
