Prior to forming Packaging Consulting Resources, John was the acknowledged architect of the “award winning” Packaging Development Department, strategist and founder of the technical Innovation Department and Research leader for the Ortho/Roundup division at The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Steinhauser (case-study) In , I Collaboratively guided senior managers and owners (Steinhauser Inc. a small family owned printing / packaging operation) to establish and implement a strategic plan. Including 4 key growth initiatives (customer acquisition, operational efficiencies, technical diversity and contingency planning), a purpose statement and a clear mission with measurable metrics that drove the business forward. (20%sales growth, 45% profitability and 60% reduction in defects and $1.4 MM cost savings on a $4.5 MM budget) MeadWestvaco-Calmar (Case-study) – 2007 I completed both a “Market Opportunities Matrix”™ allowing for fact based robust discussion on markets ripe for entry with existing and potential technologies as well as a “Technologies Opportunities Matrix”™ including ideation sessions to capture and rank both existing / revised as well as new technologies and projects. Note: ranking was based on effort and reward. New markets were targeted and highly ranked projects forwarded with the R&D pipeline. Ortho/Roundup (case-study) In 1999 The Scotts Company acquired The Ortho/Roundup business. Under John’s direction, Packaging and Applicator development became fully integrated within 6 months. John’s overall leadership of the Controls (Ortho/Roundup) Research & Development area resulted in the successful technical and financial turnaround of the Controls category incorporating both strategic and tactical leadership. Developed and launched a patented, EPA endorsed, revolutionary liquid dispensing system Pull-N-Spray II was the pivotal package/applicator that delivered on the strategic and profitable shift to Ready to Use products. The results recorded with the new product lines and strategic positioning: Double-digit sales growth in (15%- 10%), $60MM in incremental sales to the business Nearly 50% EBITA growth in X profit / over $32MM to SMG bottom line. Miracle-Gro (case-study) Upon the successful completion of the industry changing transition of Scotts Turf Builder packaging, the late Horace Hagedorn, founder of Miracle-Gro and Chairman of The Scotts Company personally requested; “I want you to do the same for my brand”. A Packaging Possibilities Roadmap™was conducted and the results generated new single serve effervescent tablets, Liquid MG concentrate in pump packaging, easy refill feeder packaging “speed loader MG”, no touch drop in hose-end feeder (this concept evolved to the recently launched MG Liqui-feed system), dosing closures for granular products, weather proof plastic packaging and easy open pouch packaging. The launch of the MG Liqui-Feed system is the largest new product launch to date $30MM and the flagship 5 lb MG made a turn around and recorded a 15% volume increase utilizing the new plastic packaging after a 4 year consecutive sales decline. The brand was redefined through packaging and applicator technology. Prior to his work at Scotts, John was responsible for leading a variety of packaging and developmental groups at Kao Brands (formerly The Andrew Jergens Company). During his tenure, major packaging innovations were instituted on packaging for numerous flagship brands incorporating extensive consumer and technical learning still in use today. As the International technical lead on several imported technologies, John continued to add innovation into the Personal Care market.
