Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Specialist Treatment Service for Wiltshire

Part of the Integrated Youth Service (IYS) – Young People focused service (under 19’s) County wide – bases in Chippenham, Trowbridge & Salisbury 4 x full time treatment workers Voluntary engagement Free and confidential service Open access Treatment services Specialist Harm Reduction services The Service

Treatment Definition: “…care planned medical, psychological, psychosocial or specialist harm reduction interventions aimed at alleviating current harm caused by a young person’s substance misuse…” Health Advisory Service (1996; 2001) Substance Of Young Needs London: N.T.A. The aim of specialist treatment interventions are: to deliver substance specific information to deliver harm reduction strategies needle and syringe support and safer injecting advice advice & support regarding poly-drug use and risk of overdose psychosocial interventions, i.e. “talking therapies” access to medical and mental health services

Treatment Treatment involves: “… a comprehensive assessment of needs followed by a structured, care planned, multi-agency working approach…” “…a range of interventions designed to identify and treat drug-related problems or conditions relating to a person’s physical, psychological or social well-being “…goal orientated approaches which are regularly reviewed with the client and comprises a number of concurrent or sequential treatment interventions…” S.C.O.D.A. Refer to treatment service when a young person is… injecting substances pregnant 13 years of age or under misusing / inhaling solvents using class A drugs misusing alcohol - showing signs of daily use and dependency/withdrawal using substances to block out distressing feelings or difficult situations no longer using experimentally or recreationally either using alone or outside of their usual friendship group using excessive amounts of depressant/sedative substances (risk of overdose) “poly-drug” use (using two or more substances at the same time) financing their substance use and increasing risk & vulnerability through sex working, criminal behaviour, i.e. dealing, running, etc. causing significant other problems, i.e. physical or mental ill health, debt, school exclusion, family problems, relationship problems, etc. 5

Specialist Harm Reduction Definition: “…specialist harm reduction refers to a range of practical and pragmatic evidence-based strategies and interventions designed to reduce the harmful consequences of substance misuse and their associated risky activities and behaviours…” Health Advisory Service (1996; 2001) Substance Of Young Needs London: N.T.A. and includes: providing information, education, advice, support and guidance being free from judgements and expressing opinions enabling and encouraging informed choice 6
