NFHS Volleyball Transparencies & Rule Changes

Rule The NFHS Volleyball Rules Committee re-affirmed the format for high school rally scoring rule changes effective this season.

(New) 1-2-2b The state association can adopt a format that permits a best-of-three match, provided all games are played to 25 points (no cap)

Rule A conference shall be conducted with the head coach and a captain from each team.

Mis-directed and shanked balls create problems when the ball touches a vertical backboard. Rule 2-2-1

If a shanked ball clearly would have gone out of play regardless of hitting the vertical backboard or not, the official should award a point to the opposing team. Rule 2-2-1

When there is a chance the ball would have remained in play had the vertical backboard not been there, a replay is called. Rule 2-2-1

C illustrates a backboard that is partially raised. Therefore, it is no longer considered a vertical backboard, but an overhead obstruction. The ball remains in play provided the ball contacts the obstruction on the side of the net extended that is occupied by team that last played it. Rule 2-2-1

It is permissible to play a ball over a non-playable area, as long as one body part remains in touch wit the playable area. Rule 2-4-2

Players may play a ball if they have a body part in contact with a playable area at the time the ball is contacted. They bay enter a non-playable area after playing the ball. Rule 2-4-2

If the curtain is less than six feet from walls or obstacles (2-1-3), the official shall order a replay if it is felt the player would have been able to make a play on the ball had the curtain not been there. Rule 2-4-2

If the player cannot make a legitimate play on the ball while moving from location A to location B as a result of the moveable curtain being in the way, the referee should order a replay. Rule 2-4-2

New volleyball net designs now allow nets that are suspended from the ceiling that raise and lower without dismantling. Rule 3-1-3

Colored panels, team logos, school and mascots are not legal on balls used during competition. The manufacturer’s logo, model number and the authenticating mark are legal. Rule 3-2-1

Effective , officials must wear all white collared polo shirts, solid black pants, black athletic shirts and black socks. Rule 5-2-1

The end of game procedure involves the officiating team communicating with each other. Rule 5-4-3b

Umpires no longer have to signal at the beginning of a charged time-out. However, at the completion of each charged time-out, they must signal how many time-outs have been used. Rule 5-4-3b

During time-outs, line judges shall stand at the intersection of the attack line and sideline nearest the referee. When needed, the referee may call the line judge to the stand for a short conversation related to the game. Rule 5-7-2c

While serving as line judges, student – athletes and adults are part of the officiating team. Trained officials should protect them from heckling by fans. Rule 5-7-2

The new linejudge “Play Blocked” signal is to cross both arms over the chest with open palms. Rule 5-7-3

An apparently unconscious player is determined by game officials. The player may not return to play in the game without written authorization from a physician (M.D./O.D.) Rule

An exceptional substitution shall count as a team substitution if the team has not exhausted their 18 team substitutions. Rule

There are a few exceptions, otherwise, coaches are to remain seated. The bench decorum in volleyball places the attention of the spectators on the players on the court. Rule d

Signal “Begin to Serve” by pointing toward the serving team’s side of the net. Blow the whistle to begin the serve. Then move your extended hand and arm horizontally to the opposite shoulder. NFHS Volleyball Signals

Umpires must keep a lineup card. They should track time-outs, substitutions and alignments. Umpires are no longer required to track servers. Rule 5-2-2c
