Organizational Skills Binders, Calendars & Time Management

Learning Target The students will develop organizational skills by selecting an organizational tool for time management, keeping a school binder and determining study skills for home.

Is this, or has this ever been, you?

What is organization? the act or process of putting the different parts of something in a certain order so that they can be found or used easily the act or process of planning and arranging the different parts of an event or activity Being organized is the key to academic success. It helps you stay on top of your assignments, reduces stress, saves time, and eliminates trouble finding material!

Terminology Prioritize: to arrange (items to be attended to) in order of their relative importance Finite: limited or restricted in nature (Time) Efficient: functioning in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effortthetime Patience: an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay Self-discipline: training and control of oneself and one's conduct, usually for personal improvement. Assertive: confidently aggressive or self-assured; direct in claiming one's rights or putting forward one's views

Use a System Deciding what to do and when to do it becomes so much easier when things are documented. Turn and Talk What items could you use in order to help you with time management and organization?

Turn and Talk Possible Options: Paper Calendar Google Calendar Calendar App on Smart Phone Day Planner Assignment Calendar

Prioritizing The time management matrix will help you identify what you really spend your time on. Popularized by Stephen R. Covey, it's based on the idea that all your time is spent in a four- quadrant matrix. Graphic Organizer: Time Management Matrix

Why time management is important! Time is finite. You’re more efficient. You develop more qualities: Patience, persistence, self discipline and learning how to be assertive. “If you haven't got the time to do it right, when will you find the time to do it over?” - Jeffery J. Mayer

Stay Organized At School Keep a three ring binder! Hand Signals (Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down) Do you have the following? Dividers- labeled, no loose papers Supply pouch- 2 pens, 2 pencils, eraser, highlighter, ruler, calculator, etc Assignment Calendars: Provided by teacher Cornel Notes: Note-taking tool Handouts: Teacher worksheets, assignment sheets

Successful Home Study Skills Setting a regular time to do homework Designate a specific place for doing homework that helps keep you focused (A Flat Surface, Good Lighting, Quiet, No Distractions) Have school supplies near by (pens, pencils, paper, scissors, glue, eraser, ruler, etc.) and a dictionary are often essential. Resource to assist you with homework include: Textbooks are often an excellent first step, but research the options available through your school or district (homework hotline, teacher websites)

3 – List 3 important things about the location you choose to do your homework in at home. List 2 items that should keep in your school binder at all times. List 1 organizational tool, you will use for time management.

Quotes “Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!” - Anthony Robbins
