Empower Within with FCCLA For those of you new to the organization, and a refresher for the rest of you, here is a glimpse of the incredible leadership experience you have ahead!

Overview ★ Members are encouraged to showcase their recruiting skills by building an active and influential FCCLA chapter. On the individual, state, and national level, members should express their passion for FCCLA to others, to motivate them to join an FCCLA chapter. Share Your Story!

Objective ★ NC FCCLA members will learn how to EMPOWER their chapters by effectively recruiting, retaining, and recognizing their members. Recruit! Retain! Recognize!

Agenda ★ Icebreakers ○ Hum That Tune (suggested candy prize) ○ Solemn and Silent (suggested candy prize) ★ Presentation ○ Goals ○ Purposes ○ Workshop ★ Handouts ○ #1 The 3 R’s ○ #2 Group/Club Collaborated Ideas ○ #3 Chapter Based Membership Strategies ○ #4 Workshop Evaluation ★ Activities ○ Show and Clap *blank paper required ○ Group/Club Collaborated Ideas ○ Chapter Based Membership Strategies ★ Quotes & Conclusion ○ Workshop Evaluation ○ Thank you and quote

Ice Breaker #1 ★ Hum That Tune ○ The presenter passes out a small piece of paper to everyone as they walk into the workshop with a nursery rhyme or popular song on it. (Explain to the students that they should not share their song with others) ■ Ex: Row, Row, Row your boat, Mary had a little lamb, etc. ○ On the presenters count, students should begin humming their tune. ○ The participants must try to find all of the other students who are humming the same song as them. No talking! ■ The group who finds all of the people humming the same song as them first, wins

Ice Breaker #2 ★ Solemn and Silent ○ The presenter will explain that this activity takes self-control ○ All participants will then be instructed to find a partner and stand back to back. ○ The presenter should then count to three and everyone should face their partner, look each other in the eye, all the while trying to stay solemn and serious. No talking is allowed! ○ The first of the pair to smile or laugh should sit down, and the remaining participants will take a new partner and repeat the exercise. (Continue until one person is left)

Goals 1. Empower your chapter through increasing overall membership by 8%, middle school membership by 5% 2.Develop 2-3 of your own strategies to recruit members to join your chapter 3.Brainstorm 2-3 ideas or fun activities you and your chapter can do to keep your members active and involved in FCCLA

Purpose ★ The purpose of this workshop is to promote chapter growth by educating students on ways to recruit, retain, and recognize chapter members.

What are the 3 R’s? ★ In the National Program Go for the Red, members are encouraged to build and sustain a strong chapter. ★ In order to do this, members need to be familiar with the 3 R’s ○ Recruit ○ Retain ○ and Recognize

Recruit ★ Recruiting members is the first step in having a successful chapter. ★ In order to gain members, your club has to be appealing, and something that everyone wants to be a part of. Make it known that FCCLA is filled with fun, excitement, and amazing opportunities. ○ Advertise a kick-off celebration for your chapter ○ Promote your club on social media and display pictures of all of the fun experiences you’ve had through FCCLA ○ Host an informational meeting where current members talk about some things that they’ve had the chance to do while in FCCLA (ex. SLC, traveling the country for NLC, or National Cluster Meetings)

Retain ★ The second step in maintaining a successful chapter is retaining members. ○ If members aren’t actively involved, they will become disinterested in being in FCCLA. ★ There are an abundance of ways to keep members interested and involved in FCCLA ex. ○ Host monthly movie nights ○ Invite guest speakers to your meetings ○ Schedule club trips

Recognize ★ And last, but not least, the final step in creating a successful chapter is recognizing your members for their hard work and dedication to your chapter. ★ Recognizing members ensures them that you care about them, and that you feel that the things they are doing are important. ★ Recognition boosts confidence, and makes members feel good about their accomplishments. ○ Hold a recognition banquet at the end of the school year ○ Display their hard work on your chapter social media pages ○ Recognize them at chapter meetings

Show and Clap ★ On your blank sheet of paper, doodle a picture of anything. (ex. a flower, an animal, a sun) ★ After everyone is done, go around the room and present your drawings. *encourage students to clap after everyone’s presentation, and then explain to them, at the end, that even recognition for the smallest accomplishment makes someone feel good.

Go for the Red! ★ Now it’s your turn to brainstorm some ideas! With the people at your table, develop at least three ideas to recruit, retain, and then recognize members of your chapter. ★ Take these ideas back to your chapter, and use them as ways to build your chapter.

Go For the Red! ★ If you aren’t already, move to sit with your chapter. On the Chapter Based Membership Strategies handout, come up with some ideas that you think will benefit your chapter and increase overall membership.

Go For the Red! ★ Please take these ideas back with you to your chapter, and work to increase membership. ★ Remember in order to maintain a strong chapter, your members need to stay active and be recognized for their accomplishments. ★ Talk with your chapter, and make a plan to increase membership using some of the strategies you developed today.

Go For the Red! ★ Before you leave, please complete the Workshop Evaluation. ★ Have a good rest of your day at Fall training, and Happy Recruiting!

Go For the Red! Thank you for your time, and I hope that this workshop was helpful. Please contact me if you have any questions at
