Current events: Tension Mounts as Jesus goes about Teaching Jesus performs miraclesJohn 11:47 Jesus’ popularity is at a highJohn 12:12-19 Jesus exposes sinLuke 19:45-46 Jesus proclaims His deityJohn 14:8-9 Jesus experiences hostilityLuke 19:47-48 Tension mounts as the cross grows closer!

Jesus makes His final entrance into Jerusalem for the feast of Passover Five days before the Passover feast, Jesus enters into Jerusalem (this study shall examine these five days) (Jn. 12:1, 12). Traveling Southwestward from Bethany Jesus approached Jerusalem (Lk. 19:41-44). The triumphal entry into the city of David (John 12:12-19). Jesus immediately exposes the errors of the people by cleansing the temple again (Mk. 11:15ff.). Jesus preaches on His purpose and mission (Jn. 12:27-40)

Jesus’ authority challenged Luke 20:1-8; Matt. 21:23-27; Mk. 11:27-33 Authority (exousia) = “power or authority to do a thing… power over, license in a thing” (LS 276). “The power to command, enforce laws, exact obedience; determine, or judge” (AHD 142). Consider Matt. 16:17 I Jn. 3:10 / Gal. 1:11-12 I Jn. 4:6 A practice done without the authority of God is called sin (Col. 3:17; I Jn. 3:4).

Parables preached in the temple while awaiting the Passover Feast Parable of the two sons (Matt. 21:28-32) Parable of the vineyard (Matt. 21:33-46) Parable of the great supper (Matt. 22:1-14) Parable of the ten virgins (Matt. 25:1-13) Parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30)

Sermons and discussions during this time: Sadducees question Jesus on the resurrection of the dead (Matt. 22:23-33). The Pharisees put Jesus to the test (Matt. 22:34-40). Jesus the master teacher (Matt. 22:41-46). Jesus pronounces 7 woes upon the scribes and Pharisees in the hearing of the multitudes (Matt. 23:1-39). Jesus calls the sinful people names (Matt. 23:33). Jesus predicts the fall of Jerusalem and His second coming (Matt. 24:1-51).

Conclusion: The Passover Feast has now arrived (Matt. 26:1). No miracles are recorded in this section of our study; His previous signs had no effect on many (cf. Jn. 12:37). The Lord’s popularity continues to be high as multitudes give Him an ear at the temple (cf. Matt. 22:33; 23:1; Lk. 19:47-48). Jesus continues to expose sin and call the names of the enemies of truth (Matt. 23:1ff). Jesus continues to reveal his identity (Jn. 14:8-9). Jesus continues to experience hostility (Lk. 19:47;Jn. 12:19). Tension continues to mount as the cross is very near.
