The Super 70’s!! By: Chelsea Huggins

8 th Grade Exit Project(: This is a list of what you will be seeing in this PowerPoint for each year in the 1970’s decade for my 8 th Grade Exit Project!! Most of what you will see is an invention, but not quite everything!! : 1970~ Floppy Disk Invention 1971~ VCR Invention 1972~ Pocket Calculators Introduced 1973~ Abortions Legalization in the U.S. 1974~ Post-it Notes Invention 1975~ Digital Camera Invention 1976~ China Earthquake 1977~ Elvis Presley Died 1978~ Ohio Valley Great Blizzard 1979~ Portable Cell Phone Invention

FLOPPY DISKS!!! In 1971 Alan Shugart led IBM engineers to invent the first floppy disk. Floppy disks aren’t as popular for storing and transporting data but they can still be used for crafty and decorative purposes.

Pro’s & Con’s of Floppy Disk!!! They store information They can be transported They are cheaper Media/Data is easily worn down due to it rubbing against the cassette. They are older They aren’t as easy to find Pro’s Con’s

VCR Invention In 1971 Charles P. Ginsburg led the Ampex Corporation in inventing the VCR- Umatic!! This VCR is a Sony product. This machine was very costly and was mainly found in large industries because of its extravagant price.

More Info On The VCR!!!  Parts that belong to this Umatic VCR are extremely rare today which increases their value.  VCR stands for Video Cassette Recorder  Only ¾ inch tapes have the ability to fit and play back in this VCR which makes it harder because it only fits one size and there are many sizes today while there weren’t so many back when it was invented.

Pocket Calculator Invention!! In 1972 these 4 basic function calculators named the executive really became popular. When it was first invented they were priced anywhere from $90-$150. They were mainly used by schools and businesses because of their quickness and accurateness.

Pocket Calculators(: Pocket Calculators caused the competition to rise between different places that distributed these devices. These calculators only required 2 AA batteries.

Comparison Between 1972 and Modern Calculators!! 1972 Calculator Modern Calculator

Abortion was Legalized!! In 1960 laws were made against abortion. In 1973 due to the Roe v. Wade case Supreme court legalized abortion for the U.S. Most Republicans appose abortion unlike the democrats who support it. 2/3 of women obtain a legal abortion.

Abortion Everybody has their own views of abortion and I think abortion should not have been legalized in the first place because it has been taken advantage of way too much. I believe this law should be made against abortion again so that these innocent babies can be born.

Post-It Notes Invented!!! oPost it notes were invented by Arthur Fry on accident. oSpencer Silvers previously tried to create these but failed when the sticky side was too sticky to allow the paper to be repositioned which is why Arthur Fry made them one day when he needed to hold a spot in his book. oPost It Notes are now distributed by 3M and there are more than 4,000 similar products today for this one accidental invention.

Post It Notes Fun Facts!!! Post It notes are made in all different colors. Post It notes are very useful when you need to make a quick note and stick it up somewhere so you won’t forget. Post It notes were not distributed by 3M until 6 years after Arthur Fry made his wonderful invention.

Digital Camera Invention(: Steve Sasson invented the first ever 8lb. Digital camera. This camera was distributed by Kodak. Steve Sasson had his masters degree in electrical engineering which allowed him to create this wonderful invention which led to many more inventions in history.

China Earthquake This China Earthquake occurred on July 28 th, 1976 at 3:42 p.m. There were definite signs of an arising earthquake but nobody ever took into consideration all the damage that could have been prevented. This Earthquake killed 240,000 people and injured 799,000 people.

Collage!!!

Elvis Presley Dies oOn August 16 th, 1977 the “King of Rock” (Elvis Presley) died in his Memphis Home bathroom. oHis Road manager found his dead body at 2:30 p.m. oThe cause of his death was his cardiac arrhythmia. oWhen he died he was only 42 years old.

Elvis Presley’s Passing o Elvis became a national sensation in o Elvis suffered from Obesity. o Elvis had a young daughter who was only 9 years old when he died. o Elvis had previously had an irregular and ineffective heartbeat.

Ohio Valley Great Blizzard!!  This Blizzard occurred from January 25 th – January 27 th in  This Blizzard had impact on Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, & Kentucky.  The temperature at the time of this was well below 0° Fahrenheit.  The barometric pressure measured in at inches.

Great Blizzard Continued(: o This blizzard began at 4:30 a.m. oThis blizzard killed 51 people

Cell Phone Invented This 1979 cell phone was invented by Martin Cooper. It was a Motorola sold by AT&T You could talk on this phone for 35 minutes before recharging it which took 10 hours to do.
