INNOVATE Through Research and Invention At The Presentation to the Faculty Senate By Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies Dean of the Graduate School December 2011

INNOVATE Three main themes for my presentation: INNOVATE – through Research, and Invention. Sharing select accomplishments achieved during my first three months at UAA as VPRGS. Strategies.

INNOVATE – Through Research

Established new “Innovate Awards” and acquired internal funding. Purpose – to stimulate and inspire research and IP. Received 44 proposals. Awards ceremony for recognition in December.

INNOVATE – Through Research Criteria - Research that either leads to: Publication in a premier peer reviewed journal. Application for funding at a particular agency. Intellectual Property (IP). Included both individual and interdisciplinary teams.

INNOVATE – Through Invention

Established first “Patent Wall of Fame.” To recognize those who have been awarded patents. First inductees will be: Professors Kenrick Mock and Bogdan Hoanca. To be presented at the Innovate Awards ceremony. To help inspire and generate More IP. Goals are to: Increase the number of patent filings. Launch start up companies. License IP.

INNOVATE – Through Strategies

Organized Vice Provost Research Council Solicited nominations from the Deans and Directors. Members are university wide: sciences, mathematics, health, engineering, business, arts, humanities. Collaborative approach across disciplines. Charter includes: Review proposals and choose Innovate Awards winners. Craft Draft of UAA Research Plan for faculty review and input. It is your plan. Take input from faculty, and administration into account and develop a final plan. Timeline: completed plan by end of February A Research Plan is important and timely

INNOVATE – Through Strategies A Statewide Research Plan under development Serve on SAC and SCoR. Ensure that UAA interests are included and appreciated. So that UAA receives resources to pursue research from the state. A UAA Research plan is critical for: Proper representation statewide. Important to increasing external federal and corporate research funding and partnerships.

INNOVATE – Through Strategies Some elements important to a successful plan: Input from faculty – it is your plan. Focus on two to three key areas. Align with global research and technology trends that are sustainable. Identify a niche where UAA can make a difference and has a cluster. Choose areas we can be the “go to university” statewide, nationally and globally.

INNOVATE – Through Strategies Goals: Significantly increase research funding – triple within three years. Increase IP and launch start up companies. Strategy: Create a research plan that presents a good story. Acquire industry partnerships and funding. Focus on positioning UAA at new agencies – those currently not receiving funding from. Organized first UA submission to MURIs UAA submitted two proposals. Initiating corporate partnerships and possible licensing.

INNOVATE –Closing Remarks With your input, great things lie ahead.
