“Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can, but does not want to; or he cannot and does not want. If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, and does not want to, he is wicked. But, if God both can and wants to abolish evil, then how comes evil into the world?” Greek Philosopher Epicurus

The Existence of God and the Problem of Evil and Suffering

The argument from evil is self-contradictory.

Points to Consider God’s character is the reference point for defining moral conduct. God’s character is the reference point for defining moral conduct. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23) If God doesn’t exist, as the atheist affirms, then good and evil cannot exist. To argue from the premise that suffering is evil is to also acknowledge the existence of God! If God doesn’t exist, as the atheist affirms, then good and evil cannot exist. To argue from the premise that suffering is evil is to also acknowledge the existence of God!

The argument from evil smacks of intellectual arrogance and presumption.

Consider these points! To stand in judgment of God’s actions is to presume to know at least as much about the world as God and to call into question the appropriateness of his actions. To stand in judgment of God’s actions is to presume to know at least as much about the world as God and to call into question the appropriateness of his actions. For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? (Romans 11:34-35) For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? (Romans 11:34-35)

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? “Now gird up your loins like a man, and I will ask you, and you instruct Me! (Job 38:2-3) “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? “Now gird up your loins like a man, and I will ask you, and you instruct Me! (Job 38:2-3) “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it.” (Job 40:2) “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it.” (Job 40:2) A Lesson from the book of Job

“Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to Thee? I lay my hand on my mouth. Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add no more.” (Job 40:4-5) “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to Thee? I lay my hand on my mouth. Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add no more.” (Job 40:4-5)

The argument from evil fails to consider that God knows what we cannot know and sees what we cannot see!

Consider these points! If God’s knowledge is far beyond our own, then is it possible that He might have purposes for suffering that we might not fully understand or know? If God’s knowledge is far beyond our own, then is it possible that He might have purposes for suffering that we might not fully understand or know? and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. (1 Peter 2:24) and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. (1 Peter 2:24)

God can use suffering to mold our character. God can use suffering to mold our character. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. (1 Peter 5:9-10) But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. (1 Peter 5:9-10)

God may use suffering as a wake up call to the unrepentant. God may use suffering as a wake up call to the unrepentant. “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy- laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy- laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

God’s response to suffering is the cross of Jesus Christ.

“I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross…In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it? I have entered many Buddhist temples in different Asian countries and stood respectfully before the statue of Buddha, his legs crossed, arms folded, eyes closed, the ghost of a smile playing round his mouth, a remote look on his face, detached from the agonies of the world.

But each time after a while I have had to turn away. And in imagination I have turned instead to that lonely, twisted, tortured figure on the cross, nails through hands and feet, back lacerated, limbs wrenched, brow bleeding from thorn-pricks, mouth dry and intolerably thirsty, plunged in God-forsaken darkness.

That is the God for me! He laid aside his immunity to pain. He entered our world of flesh and blood, tears and death. He suffered for us. Our sufferings become more manageable in light of his. There is still a question mark against human suffering, but over it we boldly stamp another mark, the cross which symbolizes divine suffering. “The cross of Christ…is God’s only self-justification in such a world as ours.
