UESCO/IFLA Workshop on Development of Information Literacy through School Libraries in Southeast Asia September 2005

Background to Project Southeast Asia comprises primarily of developing nations Information is important for development – national, organizational and personal The amount and complexity of information in the world is increasing There is a need to develop capabilities among people to use this information

Rationale for Project Providing computers, connectivity, and content are necessary, but not enough to develop the capacity to use information Developing the capability to locate, evaluate and use information is best done through formal educational programs Formal education programs best start with children in schools School libraries, as centers for information collections and services, are best suited to be the focus for information literacy efforts

The Project To examine the current state of information literacy efforts in schools in Southeast Asia To develop appropriate action plans for the involvement of school libraries in the development of an information literate society

Goals of Project To provide a common understanding of information literacy To promote discussion of issues and collaborative efforts in the promotion of information literacy To assess the current state of information literacy education in Southeast Asia To develop a series of recommendations and action plans, based on the assessment, for the enhancement of information literacy in Southeast Asia

The 2004 Workshop Held here at UNESCO Bangkok on October 2004 To develop a common concept and indicators for information literacy for Southeast Asia To develop guidelines and tools for the conduct of surveys on information literacy

Post-2004 Workshop Activities Using the guidelines and tools developed in this workshop, conducted country assessments to determine –the current status of information literacy teaching, and –the role, readiness and requirements of school libraries in promoting information literacy

This Workshop To share the findings of national surveys To develop recommendations and action plans for further development of information literacy and the role of school libraries in this development process

This Workshop Combined with Follow-up Workshop to 2003 IFLA/UNESCO Workshop on School Libraries

Approach to This Workshop A sharing of the findings Learning about information literacy practices around the world Developing a vision for our own country / region Developing action plans towards attaining that vision
