CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Some Difficulties
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, Difficulties (I) Under configured/unsupported hardware NT4 – Windows 2000 coexistence –Roaming profiles Can be disabled –NTFS permissions Use trustee manager Applications accessing directly hardware –Scanners; CD Writers; etc. Stability –People do not logoff anymore What are logon/logoff scripts useful for? –Offline folders sometimes confusing I’ve lost half of my folders ! Training obviously needed Outlook not the perfect tool –Needed at least as Schedule+ replacement –Parameterization very important
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, Difficulties (II) Applications –Some applications badly written Typically uses.ini files Requires (sometimes) tricky scripting/VB –Unavailability of MSI Workaround by using VBScript ZAP files calling setup –Coexistence with other tools E.g. Oracle, AFS MS Group Policy –Not very flexible E.g. Office 2000 security patch requires complete redeployment Leaving the domain removes Office SMS –Software metering does not scale Handling of tricky PnP problems –E.g. Siemens Lifebook does not see the network adapter when booted on batteries –Undocking from port replicator cannot be done while in standby or hibernation MS handling of (security) patches is targeted at the masses, not in a corporate environment –E.g. numbering does not change for different revision of the same patch
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Evolution over the year
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, NICE 95/NT/2K (D)Evolution
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, NICE 2000 Breakdown
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, Divisional evolution November, % of 5275 machines are Windows
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, Future of NICE 95/NT – June ’01 Proposal Freeze NICE 95/NT by end of 2001 –Still installable by floppy –No new applications, functionality, etc Stop (central) support by mid 2002 –No answers from helpdesk –Solution to problems: upgrade to W2K –Still installable by floppy Ensure servers are running until end of 2002 –NICE 95/NT environment still working NICE 95/NT for new PC’s ? –Unlikely new PC’s will be able to run Windows 95 –We still have a stock of Windows 95 capable PC’s
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - December 6, Summary People usually not unhappy happy with NICE 2000 –Especially compared to NICE 95 –Mobile computing is now easier Windows 2000 is maybe not perfect –But every time we looked a a problem, there was a solution –There are numerous tools and interfaces available –And … we now have a PSS license ! Will not be easy to keep the momentum –But essential in order to reduce support costs –E.g. Coexistence, security fixes, hardware support CERN seems more advanced than other HEP labs in terms of W2K deployment, especially on the server side All this has only be possible because of your collaboration – thank you !
