Traditional Forms Of Energy (Natural Gas, Oil, Coal) By: Jennifer Garcia Sanchez 808

What is a Fossil Fuel? A fossil fuel is a substance rich in energy formed from the remains of plants and animals. Examples of fossil fuels are natural gas, oil, and coal. They take many years to produce yet they burn so quick.

How is a Fossil Fuel made? Fossil fuel is formed from plants and animals that lived 300 million years ago, in swaps and oceans.

What are the different types of Fossil Fuels that are used to generate energy? There are many fossil fuels used to generate energy, but we have a top three which are: Oil Coal Natural gas

How are these Fossil Fuels extracted from the Earth? It is different for every place, but to remove oil you need to make a hole in the ground. A jack pump is then located in the hole, it then sucks the oil out of the ground like a vacuum. Natural gas goes through the same process that oil goes through. But the natural gas passes through more fluently. Coal is found underground, it has to go through a mining system. Tunnels are built so workers can transport easily from one side of the mine to another. Coal is dug out with shovels and picks and mining equipment.

What kinds of environmental damage occur as a normal part of the extraction process? Around the world there are many oil spills that cause oil to get into our oceans. The oil kills many animals and disrupt food chains and also food webs. Many countries depend on oil so losing some is very bad. It increases the sale prices of oil. Oil is also very hard to clean up.

A quick look at another form of energy: Nuclear energy and the environment. The damage done is nuclear meltdown. Causing the nuclear tanks to heat up, which causes a lot of heat. This just happened in Japan in March 15,2011.

How can these environmental damages be reduced or eliminated? The damages can be repaired with basic things such as eating healthy. [Organic food] Use or buy light bulbs that reduce the energy of the Earth. Start composting and helping the society by planting, trees, flowers. That help take in carbon dioxide. Reduce the use of plastic bags & water that is running, and electricity that is not being used around the house.

What YOU can do to help reduce these impacts? Save energy by turning off the lights when you leave a room. Cut back air conditioning and heating use if you can. Repair any leaks as soon as you can. Take short showers & turn the water off when brushing your teeth. Recycle paper, bottles and anything you can. Reuse plastic bags, coffee mugs, boxes.

Don't worry! Fossil Fuel will last forever! Not really... So do something about it!!

Remember go green for a better planet!
