GCLG Glasgow Colleges Library Group Strategic Staff Development

GCLG: a little background Group of college librarians representing 8 FE Colleges in Glasgow Originally formed in 1998 as the Library and Information Access Group of the Glasgow Telecolleges Network (GTN) Major focus of the group was the Next Generation Library project which procured the Horizon LMS Meets every 6 weeks to pursue collaborative agenda Collaborative staff development is a high priority of the group

Why staff development? To raise awareness among staff To develop staff skills To develop the service To try to ensure consistent services and standards across the Glasgow College Libraries To help meet the expectations of “instant expert syndrome” Learning by doing and sharing the experience

Project: Horizon training Horizon module training materials were poor and more akin to workshop materials than detailed instructions and procedures GCLG produced Horizon module training materials for staff which were more targeted to meet our needs

Project: Cataloguing Using shared Horizon databases demanded upgrade of bibliographic records to MARC 21 standard Demanded consistency of practice This required staff training GCLG metadata sub-group produced standard templates by format Training in cataloguing & metadata conducted

Project: Online Study Skills Pooled existing study skills materials from colleges Created “College Library Information Skills” Created online resource “Research & Study Skills” using Course Genie which can be uploaded to any College VLE Distributed this resource to all Colleges and uploaded to GCLG Hub Able to advise colleagues on creating similar online resources
