More than “remedial”, Developmental Education is “The teaching of basic skills combined with assessment, advising, counseling, tutoring, and individualized learning experiences designed not just to reteach basic content, but also to promote student development.” Hunter Boylan National Center for Developmental Education

Whom Do We Serve? The poor chooser –No college prep in H.S. The adult learner –Long absence from school Students with disabilities –Learning and Physical The ignored –Undiagnosed learning disabilities

How Do We Know? COMPASS placement assessment scores. Self placement TABE test for ABE students

According to Robert McCabe, in No One to Waste Only 42% of those are graduating with college-entry skills. However, in the 21 st century, 80% of new jobs will require some post-secondary education. Only 67% of young Americans earn standard H.S. diplomas.

Statistics from YC 2005 COMPASS Data 33% placed into three classes. 87% of incoming students placed into at least one developmental- level class. 57% placed into two or more classes.

What do we offer these students? Tutoring through the Learning Centers Adult Basic Education courses Student Services advising 0-level & 100-level skill-building classes in English, Math, and Student Success

Our Goal: To help underprepared college students attain their academic goals.

College Success Skills Not just for Developmental Students Develop life skills as well as academic Cooperative process between faculty and student services

Learning Outcomes 1. Create and implement a time management & personal organizational system. (1) 2. Apply specific study skills including note taking and test taking strategies and memory enhancement techniques, to course content. (2, 3)

Learning Outcomes 3. Develop and articulate short and long- term goals for career development and academic success. (4,5) 4. Define personal responsibility and motivation and explain how they affect academic performance. (4)

Learning Outcomes 5. Identify academic resources and support services important for academic success. (6) 6. Identify and adapt personal learning styles to enhance academic achievement. (7)
