Energy costs rise annually and energy waste is rising along with the costs. School districts, especially larger ones, will spend upwards of $500,000 to a million dollars annually on utility costs. This is a significant amount of dollars allocated to school districts out of the general budget. If every employee helped to conserve energy, thousands of dollars could potentially be saved annually. STAFF EXPECTATIONS Ensure that classroom doors remain closed at all times when HVAC is operating Thermostats should be adjusted within the energy conservation guidelines Lights should be turned off when leaving the room, even rooms with light sensors All exhaust fans should be turned off at the end of every day and during unoccupied hours All office machines (copiers, laminating equipment, etc.) should be turned off each night and during occupied times when not in use

Network equipment is excluded All projectors, overheads, VCRs, DVD Players, etc., should be turned off when not in use Where possible, staff should utilize power strips, which can be switched off at the end of the work day to ensure complete power shut down of applicable equipment and devices REMINDER: it is a fire code violation to ‘daisy chain’ power strips and extension cords

STAFF EXPECTATIONS 3 All appliances (including refrigerators) should be emptied and unplugged over extended break periods The use of electric space heaters should be discouraged as they are considered a fire hazard Under certain circumstances, if a space heater is required, utilize ones that meet UL and Energy Star standards

CUSTODIAL STAFF EXPECTATIONS 1 Control temperatures of common areas, such as, halls, cafeteria, etc. Verify nighttime shutdown of HVAC Check for proper thermostat settings and functions Check for areas that are overheated or overcooled and report these to the Energy Conservation Manager or Facilities Director Turn off lights in unused areas Turn off all exhaust fans every night or during unoccupied hours unless necessary for indoor air quality

CUSTODIAL STAFF EXPECTATIONS 2 Follow procedures in place for setbacks/shutdowns during weekends and vacations Adjust custodial start time during breaks and summers to more appropriate seasonal work hours Utilize daily, weekend and holiday shutdown lists Respond to building requests for climate control only when rooms/spaces are outside Energy Conservation Guidelines Communicate areas where controls fall outside the guidelines to proper personnel Maintain set points for heating and cooling unless authorized by appropriate personnel

Use the team cleaning method during summer months if possible Report wasteful practices or situations to appropriate personnel (i.e., leaking faucets, malfunctioning windows/doors, etc.) Communicate areas of success, improvement and concern to the appropriate personnel CUSTODIAL STAFF EXPECTATIONS 3

Enduring Principles. 12 Verify HVAC equipment is running properly and achieving night setback temperatures Identify equipment unresponsive to controls and share information with proper personnel Set equipment to district guidelines unless authorized by appropriate personnel Check and repair as needed, all building insulation, caulking and weather-stripping Inspect heating and air conditioning equipment according to schedule. Change filters as required Replace worn seals, fittings, traps, etc., and check ducts for leakage. MAINTENANCE STAFF EXPECTATIONS 1
