As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Scratching to Make Learning Relevant October 20, 2012 21st Century Skills Core Subjects – 3Rs and 21st Century Themes Learning and Innovation Skills – 4Cs Information, Media, and Technology Skills Life and Career Skills Scratch enable students to develop 21st century skills. These are skills deemed necessary by educators, businesses, and industry for students to attain in order to successfully compete in this world’s digital economy as business has shifted from industrialization to an information or digital base. There are many factors that contribute to the digital and 21st century skills are divided into 4 areas which include the core subjects which are the basic subjects that we’ve all taken from elementary – high school with added 21st century theme subjects which include: Global awareness Financial, economic, business, and entrepreneurial literacy Civic literacy Health literacy Environmental literacy Also included are Learning and Innovation Skills which include critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation skills, as well as Information, media, and technology skills (otherwise known as digital literacy), and Life and career skills. Visual & Object Oriented Scratching to Make Learning Relevant October 20, 2012 Visual & Object Oriented The graphical blocks used in the creation process are called scripts. These scripts are color coded and have unique shapes. This provides an unambiguous view of the programming commands allowing users to easily distinguish between the type of scripts needed or not needed in the creation or troubleshooting process which facilitates computational thinking. Students program by easily snapping and detaching the scripts without the need of complicated codes while still using the computational thinking skills required in computer programming. R.
