Mr. Carpenter - USPS

Parliamentary System: Presidential (Prime Minister), Legislative, and Judiciary branches all located together This type of government is seen in many places throughout the world most notably, Great Britain

Presidential System: Branches of government are divided with separate powers dedicated to each branch In the government of this commonwealth, the legislative department shall never exercise the executive and judicial powers, or either of them: The executive shall never exercise the legislative and judicial powers, or either of them: The judicial shall never exercise the legislative and executive powers, or either of them: to the end it may be a government of laws and not of men.

Dividing different powers among three branches of government Prevents one branch from gaining too much power Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches have their own unique powers

Why is it important to separate the powers of the government? Think about the reasons leading up to our Revolutionary War…

Prevents branches from abusing their powers Requires cooperation between the branches of government

Can override a presidential veto (2/3 vote in each house) Can impeach and remove the president Ratifies presidential appointments Authorizes/appropriates funds for legislation Approves (confirms) federal judges Can impeach and remove judges Authorizes use of military action – Formally declares war

All LEGISLATIVE powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States… therefore Congress is the lawmaking branch of the National Government

Proposes legislation (laws) Vetoes legislation (laws) Makes treaties w/ foreign countries Appoints federal judges Enforces court decisions Commander and Chief of Armed Forces

The EXECUTIVE power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America… The President is given the law-executing, law- enforcing, law-administering powers of the National Government.

Reviews executive decisions Reviews congressional laws Judicial Review (executive and legislative) Supreme Court Justices appointed for life

The JUDICIAL power of the United States shall be vested in one SUPREME COURT, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish…The federal courts, and Supreme Court, interpret and apply the laws of the United States in cases brought before them.
