Think, pair, share! In pairs, identify three ways in which the following people might benefit from the growth of tourism in Spain.

Marycarmen, a waitress in Malaga. Martín, a taxi driver in Valencia.

Benefits of tourism in Spain Tourism creates both direct and indirect employment for the Spanish people. Direct Employment: Direct Employment: Hotels, restaurants, bars. Activities provided for tourists – water sports & golfing – also create employment for local people.

Benefits of tourism in Spain Indirect Employment: Indirect Employment: Tourism also provides jobs for people who supply the hotels and restaurants – e.g. fishermen and farmers.

Benefits of tourism in Spain Along with job creation, the growth in tourism benefits the people of Spain in the following ways: Services: Services: Services provided for tourists in any given region can also be used by the local people. – These include banks and medical centres.

Benefits of tourism in Spain Infrastructural Development: Infrastructural Development: transport and communicationservice The movement of people and goods from one place to another occurs within the transport and communication sector. This is a service and, therefore, an example of another tertiary activity. Tourism in Spain has led to improvements in this sector. – Better transport and communication links.

Benefits of tourism in Spain Roads: Roads: These have been developed to deal with increased traffic caused by tourists. Motorways link airports and tourist resorts. E15 Motorway: E15 Motorway: Located on the eastern and southern coats of Spain. Toll-free (no charge for using it). It links many of the key tourist resorts on the Mediterranean. (Remember Martín? He might use this to drive Marycarmen from Valencia to Malaga!)

Benefits of tourism in Spain Rail Network: Rail Network: This is well developed in Spain. A rail system links all major cities. The capital city, Madrid, is linked to other large cities in the country via the LAV. Airports: Airports: Many located across Spain and its islands (see page 59). These receive chartered flights organised by tour operators during the peak tourist season.
