What does it look like to get acid in your eye?

Lecture 0.1 – Lab Rules

What are the rules for chemistry labs?

I. General Safety Rules 1. Listen to or read instructions carefully. 2. Always wear safety goggles 3. Notify your of any spills or accidents.

I. General Safety Rules 4. After handling chemicals, wash your hands. 5. During lab work, keep your hands away from your face. 6. Tie back long hair.

I. General Safety Rules 7. Roll up sleeves. 8.Know the location of the fire extinguisher

I. General Safety Rules 9. Never put anything into your mouth. 10. Clean up your lab area. 11. Never “horse around” in the laboratory.

II. Glassware Safety 1.Chipped or cracked glassware should not be used. 2.When pouring liquids into glassware, make sure the container you are pouring into is resting on a table. 3.If a piece of glassware gets broken, do not try to clean it up.

II. Glassware Safety 4. Do not place hot glassware in water.

III. Chemical Safety 1.Wear protective goggles always. 2. Never mix chemicals together unless you are told to do so. 3. Never taste any chemicals.

III. Chemical Safety 4. If you need to smell the odor of a chemical, waft the fumes. 5. Follow the instructions when disposing of all chemicals.

Lab Safety Contract Take out the lab safety contract By signing this, you understand that these are the rules for our lab and violating them can lead to loss of lab privileges.

5 Minute Break

Magically Separating Mixture

Justify – TPS Why did the mixtures separate?

What is density?

I. Density Density is the mass per unit of volume Very large mass in a very small space, then we say that it is very dense. Very small mass in a very large space, then we say that it is not very dense.

Is this very dense or not very dense?

.

Density of Pennies and Nickels Pennies since 1982 have been made of a copper outside and a different metal center. US Nickels are made of a metal mixture of 75% copper and 25% nickel In this lab, you will be testing to see if these coins match the accepted density.

Calculating Volume by Displacement Many objects have odd shapes and don’t have an easy way to calculate its volume. Volume by displacement is an easy way to calculate volume.

What is a hypothesis?

I. Formulating a Hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess. Given as a “If _______, then ______” statement. E.g. If I put salt in water, then it will dissolve. NOTE – A hypothesis must be testable

WRITE A HYPOTHESIS FOR THIS LAB

Density Lab

Closing Time Turn in the lab handout before you leave. This is worth points!
