We’re In This Together! Creating partnerships and sponsorships that work.

A single arrow is easily broken, but not ten in a bundle. Japanese proverb

Alliances and Partnerships Goal: ASCD’s partnership program leverages the mutual strengths of ASCD and its partners through collaborative activities that further each partner’s shared interests and goals.

Definitions Alliances: Collaborative connections with other organizations. Partnerships: Negotiated agreements with complementary organizations to establish mutually beneficial connections that enhance the activities of each partner.

The most important single central fact about a free market is that no exchange takes place unless both parties benefit. Milton Friedman Milton Friedman

On Common Ground Create a partnership for ~ an idea, process, or concept ~ determine with whom you will partner ~ pursue objectives worthy of our best efforts

Partners Core Partners NJ Principals and Supervisors Assoc/ Foundation for Educational Administration NJ State Department of Education Center for Innovative Education at Kean University New Jersey ASCD

Common Goals 1. To provide research-based, high quality professional development to educators throughout the state, that supports and enhances major initiatives of the New Jersey Department of Education 2. To partner with NJ Department of Education, Center for Innovative Education at Kean University, NJ Principals and Supervisors Association/Foundation for Educational Administration, and other educational organizations in providing high quality professional development for all educators 3. To advance NJASCD from the realm of success into the arena of significance by influencing the use of best practices and research-based processes in curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development throughout the state of New Jersey

Grow the Partnership Identify new issues Invite specialists on issue or topic to join for that piece or event Decide whether to partner, co- sponsor, or endorse the event Build professional capacity

Definitions Strategic Partners: Those partnerships with outcomes that result in access to new audiences and position ASCD as the “thought leader’ in educational leadership. Outcome: Changes in policy or changes in dialogue.

Leadership for Success NJASCD took the leadership role Agendas for all meetings Facilitator of discussions ~ All equals at the table ~ Ideas accepted, discussed, and decided collectively ~ Each organization accepted responsibility for one major event a year Notes of all meetings

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Offerings – connected to state initiatives/ state requirements Committee members ~ Core members of Partnership ~ Specialists of Content or Practice Presenters – high quality, nationally recognized leaders Responsibilities and support

Policy Design Partnership/Co-Sponsorship ~ Responsibilities ~ Agreed-upon aspects of the activity ~ Budget and accounting of revenues and expenditures ~ Share of net profits ~ A contract may be necessary A sample Policy on Endorsing or Co-Sponsoring Events

Definitions Business Partners: Those partnerships with outcomes that result in content, delivery, or sales of our programs, products, and services. Outcome: Changes in revenue stream for our programs, products, or services.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Henry Ford

The Challenges... Different strengths; each partner should shine Protect the core Build trust among partners Communicate openly and often Decisions should reflect everyone’s best interests Include “Bests” at the table

Partnership Offerings... in the beginning Professional Learning Communities with Rick and Becky DuFour (3 years) The Curriculum Series (2 years) Understanding by Design with Jay McTighe (3 years) Differentiated Instruction with Carol Ann Tomlinson (2 years) The School Improvement Project (2 years)

Growth - Substance - Impact Secondary School Leadership in a Time of Change: The Wallace Leadership Project (a full year project with 23 high schools in NJ) Creating Personalized Student Learning Plans (a new series with Joe DiMartino and 16 pilot schools) Supervisors as Agents of Change in Transforming Secondary Schools (a project to design curriculum and unit plan templates for NJ educators) Creating 21 st Century Schools in New Jersey: the NJ Statewide Systemic Model for Continuous Professional Learning and Growth

The Power of Professional Partnerships Influence on policy and practice Create a model of collaboration Access and offer the best of professional resources Shape initiatives; give meaning to concepts; highlight excellence in our profession We Learn. Teach. Lead.

Definitions Corporate Sponsorships: Negotiated agreements with corporations in which marketing rights and benefits are extended for a fee

Sponsorships Transitioned from a “one-off” conference sponsorship model to an integrated marketing partnership model, providing sponsors with access to ASCD’s major assets

PREMIER SPONSOR Highest level of sponsorship, providing year-round affiliation with ASCD and use of “ASCD Premier Sponsor” logo Highest level sponsorship of Annual Conference, Summer Conference, Conference on Teaching and Learning Advertising: Educational Leadership, ASCD website, conference programs, Conference Daily Announcement of the sponsorship in SmartBrief, a press release, and on ASCD website Support of an ASCD program such as the Whole Child Initiative or Outstanding Young Educator Award

ANNUAL CONFERENCE SPONSOR Sponsorship in conjunction with Annual Conference only On-site and website recognition Advertising and exhibit space
