Do-now: choose one question below to answer in your journal On the TV show Super nanny, an experienced nanny helps parents improve their children’s behavior. 1. What sort of positive or negative reinforcements might the nanny use to help the children learn appropriate behavior? OR 2. Why might this nanny be needed? What actions might the parents be taking (or not taking) that is leading to the undesired behavior?

Today’s objective and agenda Students will be able to differentiate between reinforcements + punishments and analyze the ethics of reinforcements by: 1. Do-now + video clip 2. Taking guided notes 3. Creating study cards and playing hot seat 4. completing a practice worksheet 5. reading an argument against reinforcements in education 6. Leading a discussion + creating a bottom line

Super nanny—focus questions What might be wrong with the way in which parents are attempting to teach their child appropriate behavior? If you were the parent of these children, how would you respond to their behavior? What might you try to do to change it?

2.2 Operant Conditioning: Reinforcements versus punishments

Punishments Methods to get rid of undesirable behavior. Positive punishments: adding in an undesirable stimulus Negative punishments: removing a desirable stimulus

Examples: let’s list some punishments and determine if they are positive or negative

Problems with Punishment 1. It models aggression as a way to solve problems 2. Breeds anger in the recipient 3. Doesn’t provide an alternative behavior. Therefore, the behavior only goes away when the punisher is around.

Note cards WHAT: one of the greatest study skills of all time! HOW: Write the term on one side, an explanation AND example on the other WHY: It will help ensure that you remember this material beyond today, tomorrow, etc.

Hot seat One person sits in the hot seat at the front of the room The person has one minute to answer as many questions as possible from the audience We record the tally on our Hot seat points board. At the end of the unit, the Hot seat winner gets HONOR…and a prize
