Presentation transcript:

Hurricanes A tropical cyclone usually with heavy rain and winds moving at knots.

Definition A violent tropical cyclone strom of the western north atlantic, having wind speeds up to 72 mph.

Causes of Hurricanes Hurricanes start when warm, moist air from the ocean surface begins to rise rapidly, where it encounters cooler air that causes the warm water vapor to condense and to form storm clouds and drops of rain. The condensation also releases latent heat, which warms the cool air above, causing it to rise and make why for more warm humid air from the ocean below.

Hurricanes can occur in… Hurricanes can occur the tropical convergence zone, near Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Mexico.

Damages from hurricanes

Hurricane categorize Saffir-Simpson Scale

Precautions for a Hurricane Have shutters on windows Make a plan ahead of time Trim nearby trees and shrubs to minimize flying branches Have a 3 day supply of nonperishable food storm shutters

Worst hurricanes Agnes 1972 Florida Alicia 1983 North Texas Allen 1980 Mexico Andrew 1992 South Florida Anita 1977 Mexico

Facts Hurricanes begins as tropical depressions area where the atmosphere pressure is just a little lower then it is in the air surrounding it.

More facts The naming alternates from female names to male names and back. Most hurricanes cost $10.5 millions.

QUIZ What is a hurricane? How are hurricanes formed? Where can hurricanes occur? How are hurricanes classified? What are possible damages of a hurricane?
