Advancing Theory & Research in the Public Health Sciences on Global Health Issues First year accomplishments

Goals for meeting To review progress to date To continue the dialog about the differences and complementary roles of public health services and clinical medical services in the US health care system (toward the goal of giving our colleagues a better understanding so that they can decide if PH services might be of value in Russia); To introduce our colleagues to faculty whose research may be relevant to the Russian health situation today; To make tangible progress on key project deliverables, in particular, the MOU, the evaluation and course development.

Project Objectives 1. To finalize plans for a new Specialization in Public Health at Novgorod State University Remarkable progress made Public health competencies, identified by American Public Health Association; National accreditation criteria, developed by Council on Education in Public Health; Essential Public Health Services, developed by the National Public Health Performance Standards Program; UMass SPHHS course catalog; Programs of study in epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, environmental health and health education. Two-day workgroup meeting in Novgorod in May

Project objectives 2. To develop at least six new or revised Public Health courses at each university One new course at each university was developed this year Two courses at each university were substantially revised as a result of this collaboration

Project Objectives 3. To initiate a collaborative Summer Institute on Epidemiology, Prevention and Public Health at NovSU Postponed

Project objectives 4. To exchange 12 sixth-year medical students from NovSU and 12 second-year Masters in Public Health students from UMA Far ahead of schedule 10 NovSU students visited UMass in October UMass students worked for 8 week in Novgorod in July & August

Project objectives 5. To exchange 3 NovSU professors to UMA for one semester each and 8 UMA professors to NovSU for periods of two to four weeks 3 NovSU faculty Umass 3 UMA faculty visited NovSU

Project objectives 6. To complete a feasibility study on establishing a dual NovSU/UMA graduate degree program in Public Health that includes the use of long-distance and blended learning technologies Approval of dual degree program by Umass Faculty Senate Two-day workshop at NovSU in May

Project objectives 7. To publish a multi-author text book in Russian on Public Health A challenge, possible re-direction
